Description
At Bath & North East Somerset Council we have one overriding purpose to improve people’s lives.

We are seeking an experienced Countryside Ranger to help deliver our ambition to manage 30% of our Estate for Nature by 2030, as part of our efforts to recover nature across Bath and North East Somerset (BANES).

The post will work alongside operational staff in the Parks and Green Spaces Team, and the Council’s Climate and Environment Team to help bring more land in the Council’s parks and open spaces into good management to deliver nature recovery, improve people’s health and wellbeing, and increase climate resilience.

The post will deliver and coordinate practical conservation tasks and habitat management within a range of parks and green spaces across BANES. This will include organising and leading practical volunteering sessions, as well as working with contractors where required.

You will be expected to work with existing volunteer and ‘friends of’ groups to identify and deliver new activities in parks that help deliver the objectives of habitat management plans, as well as helping to establish new volunteering or ‘friends of’ groups where they are most needed.

The role will report to Parks and Open Spaces Service Manager, and you will be expected to work closely with colleagues working on nature recovery with the Climate and Environment Team. In particular, you will collaborate with the Land Management Advisor to agree a programme of work that will deliver outcomes defined in habitat management plans and stewardship agreements.

We are looking for candidates who are accustomed to working outdoors and bring valuable skills from previous countryside ranger type positions. The successful candidate will have experience in habitat management and in the use of tools needed for conservation activities, as well as being adept at installing and maintaining fencing other infrastructure needed for public access. Familiarity with delivering work against prescriptions outlined in habitat management plans, establishing site-check regimes, and coordinating subsequent work programmes is beneficial.

We are also looking for experience in supervising and working with volunteer groups and contractors, as well as strong leadership, organisational and communication skills. Prior experience of having helped establish volunteer groups or similar and providing training to volunteers will be looked upon favourably.

This post is Full time (37 hours per week). Occasional weekend working may be required, with time off in lieu granted.
