Craft Apprenticeship - Machining

Altrad are currently on the lookout for a Craft Apprenticeship – Machining, to join the business to work on complex, precision machining tasks producing components from specialist materials using both conventional and CNC machine tools. Our programme combines structured further education with hands‑on, practical experience alongside highly skilled engineering professionals working on global projects. You’ll gain the knowledge, confidence, and real‑world capability needed to accelerate your personal and professional development.

Year 1

Full‑time training at Glasgow Clyde College – Anniesland Campus (August–June)

  • SVQ Level 2 – Performing Engineering Operations
  • National Certificate in Manufacturing

Years 2–3

Based in Renfrew

  • On‑the‑job training working towards SVQ Level 3
  • Mentored placement within the machine shop/manufacturing facility
  • Development aligned to specific competencies
  • Regular reviews by an external accreditation/training body
  • Role‑specific training
  • Completion of Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 7

Years 3–6

Continued on‑the‑job development in Renfrew

  • Ongoing mentoring and competency development
  • Regular reviews and feedback
  • Progression toward fully qualified machinist status

Key Deliverables:

  • Attend college classes, assessments, and examinations as required
  • Carry out technical activities under supervision
  • Uphold Altrad’s safety culture in all working environments
  • Maintain a personal logbook/portfolio to satisfy Modern Apprenticeship requirements
  • Support senior team members with project work as needed
  • Achieve personal development targets aligned with the Craft Apprenticeship scheme
  • Complete SVQ2 – Performing Engineering Operations and NC Manufacturing in Year 1
  • Maintain logbook/portfolio for SVQ3 (Years 2–3) in line with SCQF Level 7 requirements
  • Support technical duties under guidance
  • Meet all health and safety obligations

During your apprenticeship, you may work with:

  • Centre Lathes
  • Saws
  • Vertical/Horizontal Milling Machines
  • Surface Grinding Machines
  • CNC Lathes & CNC Milling Machines
  • EDM Wire Cutting Equipment

  • Key Requirements:

    • Minimum of 4 National 5s at grade B or above, including Maths, Physics, English, and one additional Science or Technical subject
    • Strong technical aptitude
    • Clear written and verbal communication skills
    • Effective teamwork
    • A willingness to learn and engage
