Role Title: Senior DevOps Engineer (Elasticsearch Focus)
Contract Length: 6 Months (with scope to extend)
Clearance Required: SC (need to be pre-cleared)
Location: Remote (initial travel for knowledge transfer, then monthly travel to client site)

We are supporting a mission-critical public sector platform and are looking for an experienced Senior DevOps Engineer with strong Elasticsearch expertise to join a platform team responsible for maintaining and evolving a complex legacy technology estate.
This role focuses on operating, improving and integrating Elasticsearch-driven services within a secure, highly regulated environment. The successful candidate will help ensure that Elasticsearch functions as a core operational capability, supporting search-driven services rather than simply acting as a logging platform. Working closely with application, infrastructure and platform teams, they will support the reliability, performance and evolution of systems that underpin critical operational services.
Key Responsibilities
- Support and maintain legacy applications and infrastructure, providing L3 support and technical ownership of key services
- Operate and support Elasticsearch clusters and search services within secure, high-availability environments
- Design, tune and maintain Elasticsearch indexes and ingestion pipelines to support operational search services
- Integrate Elasticsearch with application services and microservices platforms, ensuring performant and reliable query behaviour
- Develop and maintain JSON-driven search schemas, ingestion pipelines and dashboards using Elasticsearch ecosystem tooling
- Monitor cluster performance, node health and query performance, identifying and resolving platform or data issues
- Contribute to technical decision making and engineering roadmaps, supporting the evolution of the platform
- Maintain system documentation, undertake peer reviews and provide guidance to engineering teams
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and automation supporting system delivery and platform operations
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong experience supporting Elasticsearch as a core application platform, not only for log aggregation
- Hands-on experience designing and managing Elasticsearch indexes, shard allocation, ingestion pipelines and lifecycle management
- Experience implementing search logic using Elasticsearch Query DSL, including relevance tuning and query optimisation
- Experience integrating Elasticsearch into application services or microservices platforms
- Strong operational experience running Elasticsearch clusters in secure, highly available environments
- Experience monitoring cluster health, troubleshooting node behaviour and resolving performance issues
- Experience building JSON-driven ingestion pipelines and Kibana dashboards for operational services
- Strong Linux administration and system troubleshooting capability
- Experience supporting legacy applications and infrastructure environments
- Experience working with web servers such as Nginx or Apache HTTP/Tomcat
- Experience with containerisation and virtualisation technologies (Docker / VMware)
- Experience refactoring legacy systems and implementing automated testing and CI/CD pipelines
Desirable Experience
- Java development experience (Java SE / Java EE environments)
- Experience integrating Elasticsearch with Java-based services or enterprise applications
- Experience working within large public-sector or highly regulated environments
- Experience supporting legacy enterprise systems and long-lived operational platforms
