Position: Electrical Design Engineer

Department: Controls / Electrical Engineering

Responsible to: Controls System Manager

Location: Gloucester / On-site (with occasional travel)

The Role

As an Electrical Design Engineer at TBS Engineering, you will be responsible for the electrical design of a wide range of standard and special-purpose machines for the lead-acid battery industry. You will take technical ownership of assigned projects, working closely with mechanical, software, manufacturing, and operations teams to deliver robust, compliant, and cost-effective electrical designs.

This role offers the opportunity to take technical leadership, contribute to complex automation projects, and play a key role in delivering innovative engineering solutions to global customers.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the electrical design of standard and special-purpose machinery, including lead casting machines, plate feeders and stackers, battery assembly and test machines, and robotic automation cells
Take technical lead responsibility on assigned projects, as agreed with the Controls System Manager and Technical Director
Produce detailed electrical designs in line with internal sales documentation and customer specifications (SSOW), including:

– Electrical schematics

– Control panel and cabinet layouts

– Bills of materials (BOMs)

– Termination lists

– Electrical design and compliance documentation

Work collaboratively with mechanical and software engineering teams to ensure designs meet functional, safety, and customer requirements
Agree electrical design approaches with senior engineers and participate in formal design reviews
Carry out and support risk assessments to ensure compliance with machine safety standards and CE requirements
Select electrical components with consideration for standardisation, availability, obsolescence, cost, and design-for-manufacture principles

Ensure electrical designs meet agreed cost targets and delivery timescales

Manage and implement design change requests efficiently and accurately

Maintain accurate and up-to-date design files, drawings, and documentation in line with departmental procedures

Highlight technical and electrical risks to relevant managers and stakeholders

Support manufacturing and operations teams to ensure designs are practical, buildable, and optimised for production

Prepare technical reports and customer documentation as required

Provide on-site customer support, including presentations and fault-finding, when required

Review and validate electrical designs and drawings produced by other engineers where appropriate

Follow departmental design processes and company policies at all times

Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives and engineering projects

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

3–5 years’ experience as an Electrical Design Engineer within the machinery or automation industry

Qualified to a minimum of HNC in Electrical / Electronic Engineering or equivalent

Strong knowledge of machine safety standards, including BS EN ISO 13849-1 & 2 and BS EN 60204-1

Experience in risk assessments and machine safety compliance (TÜV certification desirable)

Proficient in electrical CAD systems; AutoCAD Electrical highly desirable

Strong understanding of design for manufacture, standardisation, and cost control

Proven ability to produce and interpret detailed electrical drawings and documentation

Ability to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary engineering teams

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Confident, proactive approach with the ability to take technical ownership

Good written and verbal communication skills

Strong IT skills and ability to manage design data effectively

Self-motivated, organised, and able to work to tight deadlines

Willingness to undertake ongoing professional development

Full passport and willingness to travel internationally on occasion

Training will be provided on the company’s IFS (MRP) data control system.
