As a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act, we must maintain effective emergency plans to ensure we can respond to and recover from major incidents and emergencies.
We are seeking an Emergency Planning Advisor to join our national team. This is a varied and collaborative role, working across the organisation and with external partners to strengthen interoperability and embed best practice in preparedness.
You will play a key role in the development and maintenance of a risk-based suite of national emergency plans. Working closely with national and area colleagues, you will ensure plans accurately reflect EA responsibilities and align with multi-agency arrangements, JESIP principles and standards. A strong emphasis of the role will be improving preparedness for high-consequence, low-likelihood emergencies and ensuring our response capability can continue during business-continuity disruptions such as IT or power failures. This includes incorporating incident-management considerations to ensure we can continue to protect people and the environment in challenging scenarios.
As we modernise our approach, we are keen to enhance how we use digital tools and tec
hnology in emergency planning. You will contribute to the development of a new Emergency Planning Hub, designed to improve the availability, accessibility and resilience of planning products. Confidence in using information systems and digital platforms to strengthen accessibility, version control and the functionality of a resilient Hub will be valued.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will hold an incident role and be available to contribute to incident response or business continuity when required. Full training and adjustments will be provided, and additional payments may apply.
The team
The Emergency Planning team provides national leadership for emergency planning and resilience, ensuring compliance with statutory duties and strengthening the organisation’s preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery capabilities.
The team is a geographically dispersed team, but we work together through shared activities and regular contact and calls.
You can be based anywhere in England and will need to be comfortable with virtual working technology and travel when required.
Experience/skills Required
We are looking for a competent emergency planner. You should be organised, proactive and able to work well independently, and with others. You will bring a broad range of skills, knowledge, and experience such as:
A kind and caring attitude with an ability to contribute to a diverse and inclusive work culture.
A good working knowledge of emergency planning and JESIP
An understanding or awareness of Environment Agency responsibilities and capabilities across incident management.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
An ability to engage with multiple stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes
