The Engineering Manager is focused on three key areas:
- Empowerment, career path and job satisfaction for their team
- Delivery by the team.
- Architecture of their area
They look after the delivery of the team assisting them with planning and estimation, they are accountable for the teams delivery against the roadmap and partner with the product manager to build out the delivery timings.
The Engineering Manager should come from a technical background, (preferably as a previous principal engineer or above) with a strong grasp on technology and delivering features. They should be technical enough to question correctly architecture and code and occasionally dipping into some coding (where time allows) to keep a broad understanding of what the team face on a day-to-day basis. They are expected to be highly business/customer focused with the right balance around ensuring technical debt is managed.
