Job Summary
The post-holder will contribute towards the ongoing maintenance and development of vaccine preventable diseases and hepatitis surveillance, which includes the sentinel surveillance of blood-borne virus testing, routine laboratory reports of hepatitis, enhanced surveillance of acute hepatitis A and B and any new hepatitis-related surveillance system. The post holder will support hepatitis outbreak response and incident surveillance activities. She/he will also support vaccine uptake monitoring systems for hepatitis and other vaccine preventable diseases.

Job Description
The post holder will:
- Maintain, develop and document vaccine and hepatitis surveillance systems including databases for each area of responsibility in collaboration with Consultant Epidemiologists, Clinical Scientists, Reference laboratory staff, and Health Protection Teams (HPTs) where appropriate. The main area of focus will be the enhanced surveillance of hepatitis A. Current applications include UKHSAs Case and Incident management System (CIMS), Second Generation Surveillance System (SGSS), MOLIS, Hummingbird for querying Statutory Notifications of Infectious Diseases , MS Access, MS Excel and MS Teams.
- Generic roles within routine laboratory reports of hepatitis, acute hepatitis A and B infections and their surveillance.
- Responsible for co-ordinating and carrying out data collection, validation, preparing and disseminating surveillance reports, and interrogating databases (including writing database queries) in response to information requests and surveillance publications and incidents.
- Working closely and effectively with clinical, microbiological and other professional scientific and administrative colleagues at UKHSA, local Health Protection Teams (HPTs) and throughout the NHS.
- Administrative tasks to support and contribute to the day to day running of the surveillance systems and outbreak response, contributing to research and scientific journals, and help maintain a scientific literature database.
- The post-holder must have excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively both autonomously and within a team.
- The post- holder will be expected to supervise an information officer and junior staff.
The Post Holder Will

Person specification
Essential Role Criteria (including Qualifications, Licenses And Registrations)
- Degree in Epidemiology (or equivalent) or significant experience of working in communicable disease surveillance
- MSc in Epidemiology or allied discipline, or significant post-graduate experience working in epidemiology or in the field of infectious diseases and their control
- Knowledge and experience of a statistical software package (R/STATA etc)
- Knowledge of infectious disease surveillance
- Ability to identify and solve practical problems and to work individually and as part of a team
- Good organisation, prioritisation and time management skills

Location
This role is being offered as office/lab based at our Scientific Campus in Colindale.
Based at our scientific campus, you will be required to have a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance. In exceptional circumstances UK residency less than the outlined periods may not necessarily bar you from gaining national security vetting and applicants should contact the Vacancy Holder/Recruiting Manager listed in the advert for further advice.
Future location
UKHSA is investing in a new state-of-the-art National Biosecurity Centre in Harlow, Essex, which will eventually bring together teams currently based at Canary Wharf, Colindale and Porton Down. For more details, please see: Huge biosecurity centre investment to boost pandemic protection - GOV.UK.
The new facilities will start becoming operational in the mid-2030s, with full completion by 2038. Staff will move in phases as facilities become available.
