The Company

At Amber Labs, we are a cutting‑edge UK technology consultancy that empowers autonomy, promotes experimentation, and enables rapid learning to deliver exceptional value to our clients. Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do, with our cross‑functional consultants, engineers, and analysts working together to shorten delivery times, minimise risk, and drive impactful results for high‑profile government and commercial programmes.

About The Role

We are seeking an experienced Lead Full Stack Developer to support a major UK public sector body, leading the end‑to‑end design and development of scalable, secure, and user‑focused digital services. You will champion engineering excellence across both frontend and backend domains, guide technical decision‑making, and mentor a multidisciplinary team while ensuring solutions align with government standards and programme objectives. This role will see you architect and deliver high‑performing full‑stack solutions using modern engineering practices, cloud‑native designs, microservices-based architectures, and intuitive front-end interfaces.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead full‑stack development approaches and promote engineering best practices across teams.
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable Java-based backend microservices along with modern frontend applications.
  • Build secure, robust APIs and integrate them seamlessly with frontend layers.
  • Architect and deliver cloud‑native solutions using Microsoft Azure services.
  • Ensure reliable interoperability between frontend, backend, and internal/external systems through strong integration patterns.
  • Develop responsive, accessible, and performant UI components using modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, or Vue).
  • Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines supporting full‑stack deployments and automated quality checks.
  • Conduct technical discovery, spikes, and evaluation of tools relevant to user interfaces, system integration, and scaling needs.
  • Mentor developers and oversee technical onboarding for new team members.
  • Drive cross‑team collaboration through pair programming and engineering workshops.
  • Ensure full‑stack components adhere to organisational, government, and cloud security standards.
  • Support delivery teams in adhering to agile methodologies and evolving programme requirements.

  • Essential Skills & Experience

    • Strong expertise in Java, backend engineering, and modern frontend development.
    • Proven experience building microservices using modern frameworks (e.g., Spring Boot) and developing front-end applications using React, Angular, or similar.
    • Hands-on experience designing REST APIs and integrating them with frontend interfaces, including event-driven/messaging patterns.
    • Strong proficiency deploying and operating solutions in Azure Cloud (AWS experience also acceptable).
    • Experience supporting end‑to‑end system integration in large-scale programmes.
    • Deep understanding of security, performance, accessibility, and reliability considerations across the full stack.
    • Experience working with Postgres databases.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead engineering practices, mentor others, and influence technical direction.
    • Excellent collaboration skills, including pair programming and cross-team engagement.

    Benefits:

    • Join a rapidly expanding start-up where personal growth is a part of our DNA.
  • Benefit from a flexible work environment focused on deliverable outcomes.
  • Receive private medical insurance through Aviva.
  • Enjoy the benefits of a company pension plan through Nest.
  • 25 days of annual leave plus UK bank holidays.
  • Access Perkbox, a global employee rewards platform offering discounts, perks, and wellness resources.
  • Participate in a generous employee referral program.
  • A highly collaborative and collegial environment with opportunities for career advancement.
  • Be encouraged to take bold steps and embrace a mindset of experimentation.
  • Choose your preferred device, PC or Mac.

  • Diversity & Inclusion

At Amber Labs, we are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. We celebrate individuality and believe that different perspectives drive innovation. Every colleague is valued, respected, and supported to thrive.
