The Position
The General Ultrasound Lead is responsible for providing clinical and professional leadership for the General Ultrasound service within NHS Orkney, deputising for the Radiology Manager when required.
The post holder will deliver a highquality, safe and effective ultrasound service across a broad, general casemix, while carrying an autonomous clinical workload and ensuring robust governance, performance monitoring and service development.
They will lead and support the sonography team, contribute to workforce planning, training and quality assurance, and work closely with radiology colleagues, primary and secondary care clinicians and visiting specialists to develop patientcentred pathways that meet the needs of a remote and rural population.

The candidate needs to value collaborative working with the team in radiology and the wider teams in acute services and primary care and within the wider ultrasound community in Scotland.
They would demonstrate resilience, sound judgement and a commitment to continuous improvement, alongside the ability to support, develop and positively influence the team.
This role will suit someone who actively wishes to live and work in Orkney, who understands the realities and rewards of remote and rural practice, and who is drawn to the professional responsibility, community connection and quality of life that island living offers.
Location, Working Pattern and Contract Duration:
This post will be based at The Balfour
The successful candidate will work: Full Time 37 hours per week - NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37 to 36 hours per week from 1 April 2026 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.
This post is Permanent
It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with NHS Orkney.
