What we are recruiting for:

This is a senior technical leadership position requiring a minimum of 10 years' experience in the construction industry combined with expert-level capability across the Microsoft BI and data stack. You are someone who can architect enterprise semantic models, write optimised DAX at scale, build streaming datasets for live operational reporting, prepare and structure data for AI consumption, perform rigorous statistical analysis in R or Python, and manage the full development lifecycle under source control - all grounded in deep knowledge of how construction projects are commercially and operationally managed. You'll own the organisation's reporting capability - board packs, finance reports, operational dashboards, and executive KPIs from site level to boardroom. You'll work directly with finance, commercial, operations, and project teams to define, build, and maintain the reporting the business runs on.

Key Responsibilities

1. Executive & Corporate Reporting

Design, build, and maintain board packs, finance reports, and executive dashboards that give leadership teams a clear, trusted view of business performance.
Define and govern the organisation's reporting data framework, ensuring metrics are consistent, meaningful, and aligned to how the business is structured and managed.

2. Business Intelligence Development

Lead the end-to-end development of Power BI reporting solutions across commercial, operational, financial, and project performance domains.
Build and optimise complex data models, writing production-quality DAX, M, R queries to transform raw system data into reliable, performant analytical datasets.
Establish version control, development standards, and deployment practices for all BI assets ensuring reporting code is rigorously managed.

3. Data Integration & Automation

Process Automation: Design and implement automated pipelines (Azure Data Factory, Power Platform/SQL) that replace manual reporting with scalable, enterprise-grade workflows.
Unified Data Modelling: Synchronise ERP, commercial, and project control systems into integrated reporting environments, normalising complex data structures to provide a single source of truth across the construction lifecycle.

4. Construction Reporting Logic

Apply deep knowledge of construction commercial and operational processes to ensure reporting reflects how work is delivered and managed - covering revenue recognition, CVR data flows, HR planning and resource analysis, programme status, subcontractor account management, and margin analysis.
Ensure reporting structures adapt as the business enters new sectors or delivery models, and identify when metrics are no longer serving their intended purpose.

5. Governance & Quality

Code Standards and Version Control: Enforce professional standards for all data assets, utilising GitHub for version control and TMDL to enable transparent, auditable, and collaborative development of complex Power BI models.
Automated Quality Assurance: Design and implement automated validation layers and exception reporting to catch structural discrepancies - ensuring data is reconciled and verified before it reaches the target audience.

Data Governance & Lineage: Maintain and map data lineage, define technical standards, and build a robust data catalogue that ensures institutional knowledge is preserved and easily discoverable.

Documentation as Code: Own the development of data dictionaries and technical documentation, ensuring that logic for metrics and project KPIs is transparent, standardised, and independent of any single individual.

6. Leadership & Stakeholder Management

Act as the reporting partner to finance, commercial, and operations teams understanding their priorities and translating them into outputs that serve their specific needs.
Mentor and develop BI analysts and reporting developers, building a team culture of precision, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Manage the reporting request pipeline, balancing urgent needs with structured development and maintaining control of delivery priorities.

Credentials

Degree in a quantitative or technical discipline (e.g., Mathematics, Engineering, Data Science, Finance) or equivalent high-level practical experience.
Evidence of Continuous Learning: Recent certifications or portfolios demonstrating advanced proficiency in Power BI (DAX/TMDL), R, Python, Scala, Databricks

Skills

Expert-level DAX - complex measures, advanced time intelligence, calculation groups, UDFs and model performance optimisation at scale (DAX Studio, TabularEditor)
Expert-level M - advanced data transformation, custom functions, parameterised queries, and API connections
Strong knowledge of TMDL for managing and version-controlling semantic model definitions
Strong SQL - complex queries, stored procedures, and views against relational databases for extraction and transformation

Source control using GitHub or equivalent - managing BI code, semantic models, TMDL definitions, and deployment pipelines with proper branching, review, and release practices

R, Python for statistical analysis - descriptive and inferential statistics, trend analysis, variance analysis, and data exploration to support business reporting and commercial insight

Power Apps development within PBI environment - building functional business applications for data capture, approvals, and operational workflows.

Power Automate - designing automated workflows that connect systems, trigger notifications, and eliminate manual data handling

Deployment pipelines - managing BI content across development, test, and production environments with governed release processes

Streaming and real-time datasets - configuring and managing live data connections for operational reporting that reflects current state, not yesterday's extract

Knowledge

Deep understanding of construction commercial processes - CVRs, cost-to-complete forecasting, revenue recognition, margin analysis, subcontractor account management, and how these translate into financial reporting
Working knowledge of construction programme management - what programme data means in practice, how to interpret float, critical path, and earned value metrics, and how reported progress relates to site reality
Familiarity with how construction projects are financially structured - preliminary costs, measured works, variations, provisional sums, retention, and how these flow through ERP to P&L
Good understanding of NEC and JCT contract forms and how contractual mechanisms (compensation events, variations, early warnings) create reporting requirements
Very good, practical knowledge, of statistical methods for business analysis: (regression, time-series, sampling, variance etc.)
Knowledge of Power BI service administration, workspace governance, row-level security, and refresh scheduling in an enterprise environment

Experience

Construction Domain Expertise: 10+ years of experience within the construction or engineering sectors, specifically bridging the gap between site-level delivery (Project Operations/Commercial) and technical data engineering.
Enterprise Power BI Architecture: A proven track record of designing and maintaining high-scale Power BI ecosystems, including the use of TMDL for version control and professional deployment workflows.
Complex Data Reconciliation: Extensive experience in "data archaeology" - reconciling and normalising fragmented data across ERP, commercial, and quality systems where no pre-existing single source of truth exists.
Full-Stack Automation: Demonstrated success in replacing manual, spreadsheet-heavy workarounds with robust, automated pipelines using SQL, the Power Platform, and modern ETL tools.
Strategic Advisory: Experience acting as a primary technical partner to Operations, Finance, HR, Commercial and Managing Directors -translating raw project data into strategic decision-making advantage.
Technical Mentorship & Influence: Proven ability to lead and mentor analysts while influencing cross-functional stakeholders without direct line management authority.
