Role Description

We are seeking a reliable and professional Hospital Porter to join our Portering Team on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract. The Portering Department plays a vital role in the smooth and efficient running of the Hospital by providing a high‑quality portering service to all departments.


This is a patient‑facing role that requires excellent interpersonal skills, a strong sense of responsibility, and the ability to respond promptly in both routine and emergency situations.


The post holder will be responsible for a wide range of portering duties, including:


  • Escorting and assisting patients with their personal belongings during admission and discharge, and accompanying them between reception/waiting areas and wards
  • Safely conveying patients on trolleys between wards, operating theatres, and the X‑Ray department
  • Transporting patients in wheelchairs to and from departments for diagnostic examinations and treatment
  • Sorting incoming consultant mail and filing it accurately in consultant folders
  • Collecting consultant folders from outpatient areas and filing them in the appropriate consultant cabinets
  • When carrying the porters’ bleep, responding immediately to cardiac arrest calls and undertaking assigned emergency duties

  • Qualifications

    • Standard educational qualifications
    • Five GCSEs (or equivalent) desirable
    • Basic computer skills desirable
    • Full UK Driving Licence (required)


    Knowledge

    • Knowledge of customer care principles
    • Awareness of health and safety standards within a healthcare environment


    Experience

    • Minimum of 6 months’ experience in a similar role and/or environment
    • Previous Hospital Porter experience desirable
