The Junior Accounts Assistant supports the accounting team with day-to-day financial operations, ensuring accurate record-keeping, timely processing of transactions, and smooth delivery of client services. The Junior Accounts Assistant supports the accounting team with day-to-day financial operations, ensuring accurate record-keeping, timely processing of transactions, and smooth delivery of client services. This role is ideal for someone starting their accounting career who is eager to learn, develop technical skills, and gain exposure to a wide range of accounting and compliance work within a professional practice.
Key Responsibilities
Bookkeeping & Transaction Processing
- Maintain accurate client bookkeeping records using accounting software (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks, Sage).
- Process purchase invoices, sales invoices, receipts, and payments.
- Perform bank reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
- Assist with maintaining fixed asset registers.
- Support the preparation of year-end accounts for sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies.
- Assist with drafting working papers under supervision.
- Prepare basic schedules for senior accountants to review.
- Help prepare VAT returns, ensuring deadlines are met.
- Support compliance checks and documentation gathering.
- Maintain organised digital files in line with firm procedures and AML requirements.
- Respond to routine client queries professionally and promptly.
- Assist with onboarding new clients, including gathering KYC documents.
- Maintain internal trackers, workflow systems, and filing structures.
- Support the wider team with ad-hoc administrative tasks.
Skills & Attributes

- Ability to organise workload and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and general IT systems.
- Willingness to learn and take direction from senior team members.
- Professional, reliable, and proactive attitude.
- Experience using cloud accounting software.
- Prior exposure to bookkeeping or office administration.
- A-levels or equivalent required.
- Studying or willing to study AAT/ACA/ACCA (supported by the firm).
- Full training and mentoring from experienced accountants.
- Study support for AAT/ACA/ACCA or other relevant qualifications.
- Exposure to a wide variety of clients and industries.
