This post would suit trainees wishing to pursue a career in surgery. It provides an excellent opportunity to expand knowledge in pre/post-operative management of surgical patients on a busy transplant ward and to develop basic general surgical/vascular/urological technical skills. Those wishing to improve their academic portfolio will be supported to do so. The post will incorporate ward and on-call commitments as well as theatre and outpatient commitments.
There will be an opportunity to have allocated time (around 25%) for a Quality Improvement project and therefore would suit individuals who wish to develop these areas. The postholder will be supervised by a Transplant Surgery Consultant as well as the Transplant medical team with whom they will be working closely.
Job description
The post will be comparable to current FY3/ST1/ST2 posts with respect to responsibilities, audit and opportunities for training. This will be adapted to your training level. The Transplant Department at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust is part of a busy multidisciplinary directorate. This post would suit juniors interested in pursuing a career in any subspecialty of surgery. They should have at least one/two years' basic training and may wish to further their experience before applying for National Training Number (Core Surgical training or Specialist Registrar) posts.
This post has been designed to assist the department in the general provision of transplant surgical services. This position will form part of a team of 3 Trust Surgical Senior House Officers (Junior Clinical Fellows) and 1 CT1/CT2 doctor who work closely with the surgical team but also with medical SHOs and Physician Associates. Registration with the General Medical Council is essential for these posts.
Clinical
The successful applicant will spend 1 week in 4 based on Richard Bright (Transplant) Ward, during the day (long day). The role will also cover this ward on 1 Saturday in 4.
The remainder of the time will be divided between clinical duties (out-patient clinics, day surgery and theatres) and the non-clinical component of this post, as detailed below.
Non-clinical
There is dedicated time (1 week in 4) for the postholder to undertake Quality Improvement work with direct supervision by a Consultant Transplant Surgeon. The project will be aligned with the Departmental Quality Improvement/Audit priorities, and will focus on one aspect of renal replacement therapy and the ongoing care of transplant and/or dialysis access patients. The postholder will be provided with support for and training in audit and quality improvement.
Research
Notwithstanding the above, all postholders will be encouraged to participate in research and audit activities. It is hoped that this post will provide excellent opportunities for the trainee to present or publish a scientific communication as well as provide a clinical service. They will also be expected to attend and contribute to the monthly Audit and Research Meetings.
Personal Skills Requirement
GMC Registration is an essential requirement for this post
You should be able to communicate with clarity and intelligibly in written and spoken English.
Other Duties and responsibilities
Clinical:
The postholder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of services to the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust to include:
(a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.
(b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.
Training of junior staff:
The postholder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior colleagues, nursing staff and medical students as agreed with their supervising consultant.
Teaching:
The postholder will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as participate in the weekly teaching programme.
Clinical Governance
All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal.
