Job Title:           Laboratory Technician

Location:           Granta Park, Cambridge, UK

Job Type:          Part-time (2-3 days per week)

Salary:               £35,000 - £40,000 (FTE)

Reporting to:    Lead Materials Scientist


About Us

Cambridge Atomworks is developing the ODIN nuclear micro-reactor and is situated at the heart of the Cambridge innovation ecosystem. We are building a high-calibre, collaborative team of experts in nuclear engineering, materials science, thermal hydraulics, and electricity generation. As we take the company forward, Cambridge Atomworks will require innovative engineering and manufacturing approaches across these fields to establish itself in emerging energy markets. 


Role Overview

We are looking for a dedicated laboratory technician to manage the daily operation of our newly commissioned lab at Granta Park, Cambridge. You will be working closely with the Materials and Chemistry team, ensuring a safe and smooth working environment for the lab users. Additionally, you are expected to contribute to lab-scale rig building projects, where customised solutions are needed for experiments/tests. Your role will be important in getting one of Cambridge Atomworks' flagship expansion projects up and running, adding extra credibility to the high-calibre scientist/engineer team.   


Key Responsibilities

Health and safety

  • Contribute to health and safety strategies and implement measures for all lab users
  • Assist with risk assessments for lab activities
  • Assist with COSHH risk assessment


Lab operation and maintenance

  • Manage supply and storage of pressurised gases
  • Manage key consumables supply to the lab, with approval from the Lead Materials Scientist
  • Monitor safety and function critical components and their expiry dates, replacement/renewal requirements
  • Troubleshoot basic lab appliances such as power supplies, pumps, furnaces, and fix them where possible
  • Engage with suppliers for instrument delivery, installation, maintenance and repair, when required
  • Conduct fire safety checks and weekly maintenance of fire alarm system


Rig building projects

  • Contribute to designing and making of lab-scale test rigs, such as heating rig, sample holder
  • Carry out machining work, when required 


Required Qualifications

  • Hold a recognised Health and Safety training qualification
  • First Aid and Fire Marshal qualified
  • Educated to Level 3 NVQ or equivalent

  • Required Experience/Skills

    • Experience of working in physical science research labs
    • Experience of working in a workshop with manufacturing skills
    • Good interpersonal skills to interact with team members in a positive way


    Preferred Experience/Skills

    • Experience in maintaining scientific instruments
    • Experience in welding, or willingness to learn
    • Knowledge of radiation hazards
