Post Title Newborn Screening and BCG Immunisation Midwife Band 6

To promote a sensitive and systematic approach to the management of the Newborn Screening and Infant Examination, Newborn Bloodspot Testing and BCG Immunisation programme.

To administer and manage the screening programmes ensuring that they are delivered in line with the recommendations of the UK National Screening Committee and the appropriate Service Specifications.

This post supports the quality and governance agenda within Maternity and is key to ensuring that midwifery practice is safe, evidence based and current, advising on changes nationally to practice and implementing them in local practice. The post holder will support the screen lead Midwife by monitoring the standards through audit and key performance indicators to stakeholders such as the Screening board.

The role is 50% non-clinical within the screening team and 50% clinical working within the maternity unit supporting the screening and BCG immunisation work. The post holder will work under the leadership of the antenatal screening lead midwife and the wider screening team.

Clinical Role

  • To work clinically within the maternity 50% of the time
  • Work alongside midwives to support the NIPE and NST
  • Undertake BCG immunisation clinics
  • To provide information and support to service users
  • Appropriately communicate sensitive information to women, families and midwives
  • Be able to deal with clients in emotionally difficult situations. Take appropriate action when confronted by aggressive clients / relatives
  • Demonstrate understanding on barriers to effective communication and modify behaviour in response
  • Manage complex situations sensitively and effectively where there may be Conflicts and communicate effectively with the multi- professional team and the client and if there are any language barriers ensure that appropriate interpreting service has been engaged
  • Promote women centred care and autonomous midwifery practice in all clinical areas
  • Attend PHE meetings
  • Can outcome of the S4 N system
  • Assist and participate in annual reports for NST and NIPE
  • Can orientate and act on the Northgate fail safe blood spot system

  • Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 286,700, providing inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and the continued upgrading of existing areas ensures the Trust now has a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit facilities. Work is also well underway on its multi-million pound new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre which will house a new Emergency Department (including Childrens Emergency Department), co-located Paediatric Assessment Unit, Acute Medical Unit and Urgent Care Centre. This is scheduled for completion this year.

    Key Responsibilities

    Clinical Role

    Service Delivery & Improvement

    • Be involved in the development, implementation and evaluation of standards of care, including guideline development, audit and quality improvement initiatives relating to newborn screening and immunisation
    • Contribute to service development using quality improvement methodology
    • Contribute to multi-professional meetings/team meetings
    • Inform the screening lead midwife of any emerging safety or quality issues becoming evident relating to newborn screening or immunisation programme
    • Provide emergency cover and at short notice for unexpected absence / sickness across the maternity service and screening team
    • Be aware of the Trusts vision statement and how this relates to the maternity services
    • Ensure that the Trusts behaviour standards are maintained
    • To assist in implementing the Trusts Maternity strategy

    Risk Management & Governance

    • Monitor and maintain quality standards of newborn screening and BCG immunisation
  • Oversee the use of the NIPE SMART system ensuring all appropriate staff are trained in its use
  • To ensure that there are robust systems in place to ensure compliance with the newborn screening programmes?
  • Assist in follow up all positive screening tests to ensure the baby has appropriate follow up arranged and ensure all outcomes are recorded on NIPE
  • SMART with other multi-professionals
  • Identify, collate, analyse and interpret quantitative data as part of the quarterly monitoring of key performance indicators under the direction of the screening lead
  • Investigate/identify and report upon screening incidents, making appropriate recommendations. With the use of the trust safeguard reporting system

  • Corporate

    • The post holder will deliver updates for staff regarding newborn screening and BCG immunisation
    • Act as a mentor for midwives undertaking the NIPE course
    • Contribute to the education and development of student midwives
    • Act as a role model at all times and promote a high standard of safe and effective care which is based upon best evidence
    • Participate in the maternity quality improvement journey

    General

    • Undertake any other duties requested as appropriate to the banding of the post.
    • Act up in the absence of the screen lead midwife
    • Engender a culture of respectful relationships.
    • Conduct oneself in accordance with NMC Code and Trust policies.
    • Take responsibility for self-development through the appraisal system and complete agreed personal development plan
