Part-Time Financial Controller

Contract: Zero-hour contract (Part-time) 

Hours: Up to 20 hours per week 

Salary: £35,000 – £40,000 per annum (pro-rata)

This is a fully remote, flexible part-time role designed to accommodate different schedules and life circumstances. Aeon Energy Ltd is a renewable energy company developing and deploying integrated solar, wind, and marine energy systems. The company works on international projects focused on island and coastal energy resilience and participates in innovation programmes supported by organisations such as Innovate UK. 

The company operates across multiple jurisdictions, with project implementation activities in markets such as the Maldives and research and development activities based in the United Kingdom. 

As a growing startup, Aeon operates in a dynamic environment where team members often contribute across multiple operational and project functions.

Role Overview 

We are seeking a Part-Time Financial Controller to support the financial management of the company as it continues to grow. The role will focus on maintaining accurate financial records, monitoring cash flow and treasury positions, preparing internal budgets, and ensuring that financial operations remain well organised as the business expands. The position will involve overseeing financial tracking across both Aeon Energy UK (AEUK) and Aeon Energy Maldives (AEML), including monitoring project budgets, operational spending, and cash allocation across different areas of the business. 

The successful candidate will work closely with management to maintain clear financial visibility across the company and ensure financial systems remain simple, structured, and scalable as the organisation grows.

Key Responsibilities 

1. Financial Management & Budgeting 

• Maintain and oversee financial records for Aeon Energy UK and Aeon Energy Maldives 

• Prepare and maintain operational budgets for both entities 

• Monitor budget performance and track deviations from planned expenditure 

• Support the preparation of financial forecasts and planning models 

• Assist management in maintaining clear financial visibility across the business 

2. Treasury & Cash Flow Monitoring 

• Monitor the company’s treasury structure and internal cash allocation across operational accounts 

• Track cash balances across different internal budget categories 

• Maintain oversight of working capital requirements and upcoming financial obligations 

• Monitor payment schedules including supplier payments, working capital facilities, and tax obligations 

• Support management in maintaining clear financial discipline across the organisation 

3. Accounting & Financial Administration 

• Maintain accurate accounting records and ensure correct entries in the company’s accounting systems 

• Assist with preparation of year-end accounts and coordination with external accountants 

• Support reconciliation of financial transactions across company accounts 

• Track invoices, payments, and receivables across projects and operational activities 

• Ensure financial records remain organised and up to date 

4. Grant & Project Financial Tracking 

• Support financial tracking of externally funded projects, including Innovate UK programmes 

• Assist with preparing financial information required for grant reporting and claim submissions 

• Maintain clear records of project-related financial data 

• Ensure eligible project costs are correctly recorded and tracked 

Experience with Innovate UK or other publicly funded innovation programmes would be advantageous. 

5. Financial Systems & Process Improvement 

• Help maintain simple and effective financial management systems suitable for a growing startup 

• Assist management in maintaining structured financial processes across the organisation 

• Identify opportunities to improve internal financial organisation and reporting 

Requirements 

Essential 

• Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial management 

• Experience preparing and maintaining operational budgets 

• Ability to maintain structured financial records and monitor financial performance 

• Strong organisational and analytical skills 

• Ability to work independently within a small startup environment 

Desirable 

• Experience with Xero or similar accounting platforms 

• Experience with Innovate UK / UKRI funded projects or similar grant programmes 

• Experience in startups, renewable energy, engineering, or technology sectors 

• Experience supporting companies operating across multiple jurisdictions 

Working Environment 

This role is suited to someone comfortable working in a small, fast-moving startup environment. 

Unlike large corporate finance teams, the role involves a mix of hands-on accounting, budgeting, financial organisation, and operational financial oversight. 

Candidates should be comfortable working independently and contributing to building simple and effective financial systems as the company grows. 

Eligibility to Work 

Applicants must have the right to work in the United Kingdom. 

Please note that visa sponsorship is not available for this part-time role. 

Working Arrangements 

• Up to 20 hours per week on a zero-hour contract 

• Primarily remote working 

• Occasional office attendance (approximately once per month) 

• Flexible working arrangements may be discussed depending on operational requirements

Salary 

£35,000 – £40,000 per annum (pro-rata based on hours worked)
