Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Waste Planning team as a Sewerage Planning Engineer, where you will play a pivotal role as the asset owner for the wastewater network.

This position sits at the heart of our wastewater capital investment programme, ensuring that all delivery activities are aligned with:

  • Strategic objectives for long-term infrastructure resilience
  • Regulatory standards set by Ofwat and other governing bodies
  • Customer expectations for service quality and environmental stewardship

What you'll do

  • Sewerage investment plan: contribute to shaping a five-year plan that aligns with long-term goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Cost-benefit focus: ensure investments are financially sound and technically justified.
  • Ofwat submissions: assist in preparing regulatory documentation and liaising with auditors.
  • Infiltration programmes: help manage programmes aimed at reducing groundwater infiltration.
  • Project review meetings: participate in adjudicating design reviews to balance compliance, cost, and customer service.
  • Design standards compliance: review project designs to ensure they meet internal standards and affordability criteria.
  • Internal teams: collaborate closely with Delivery, Operations, and Development teams.
  • External stakeholders: engage with councils, the Environment Agency, and other authorities to align on flood risk and infrastructure planning.
  • Customer liaison: communicate plans and risks to residents and parish councils.
  • Brief writing: draft clear, value-driven briefs for technical solutions.
  • Plan development: contribute to infiltration reduction plans and Drainage and Wastewater Management Plans (DWMPs).

What you'll need

  • Analytical thinking: crucial for hydraulic modelling, infiltration analysis, and investment planning.
  • Communication skills: influential verbal and written skills needed for stakeholder engagement and reporting.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: the ability to work across Delivery, Operations, Development, and external agencies.
  • Decision-making: firm, consistent choices required during project reviews and technical adjudication.
  • Project management: juggling multiple schemes and programmes simultaneously.
  • Customer engagement: liaising with residents, councils, and public forums to explain plans and risks.
  • A degree: must be in a relevant field (not strictly engineering), showing flexibility in academic background.
  • Sewerage system design: understanding of layout, capacity, and compliance.
  • Hydraulic modelling: familiarity with tools like InfoWorks or similar.
  • Geospatial tools: GIS platforms for mapping and visualisation (eg, ArcGIS or QGIS).
  • Office software: proficiency in Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word for data analysis and reporting.
  • Initiative and independence: the ability to self-direct with minimal supervision.
  • Relationship building: strong interpersonal skills to foster trust across teams and with external bodies.
  • Public-facing confidence: comfortable presenting to parish councils and engaging with residents.

What you'll receive

  • A combined pension contribution of up to 20%.
  • Career progression and professional development opportunities.
  • 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
  • The opportunity to buy up to 10 days' holiday and sell up to five every year.
  • A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
  • Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
  • A new electric car in exchange for part of your gross salary.
  • Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
  • One paid volunteering day each year.
  • Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
  • An interactive health and wellbeing platform.
  • Support from mental health first aiders.
  • £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone to work for us.
