Principal Structural Engineer

Location: Manchester (Office-based / Hybrid with site visits)

Employment Type: Permanent

Work Pattern: Office-based with hybrid flexibility


Overview

A leading engineering design consultancy is seeking a Principal Structural Engineer to lead structural design delivery across complex rail and water infrastructure projects. Based in Manchester, this senior role involves technical leadership, mentoring of engineers, and providing expert input to high-value projects within regulated environments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver structural design solutions across rail and water infrastructure projects.
  • Produce and review calculations, reports, specifications, and drawings.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentor junior engineers and technicians.
  • Ensure designs comply with industry, client, and professional standards.
  • Support multidisciplinary coordination and respond to construction-stage technical queries.
  • Attend and lead design reviews, technical meetings, and client presentations.


Candidate Profile

  • Extensive structural design experience within UK rail and/or water sectors.
  • Strong background in reinforced concrete and foundation design.
  • Degree, HND, or equivalent technical experience.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working toward chartership.
  • Proven ability to lead design delivery and support junior team members.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and technical leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and buildability considerations.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to attend site as required (desirable).
