The Chatham site, founded in 1857 and acquired by CPI in 1999, is the largest CPI book manufacturing site in the UK, producing an average of 400,000 books every 24 hours. As part of CPI Group, CPI Books contributes to an annual output of around 160 million books in the UK and a European capacity of 700 million books, serving over 2,000 publishers across diverse sectors. The organization offers a large-scale, stable, and process-driven environment for people interested in print manufacturing and book production. Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Printer role based at CPI Books’ Chatham facility. The Printer will operate and monitor printing presses and related equipment to produce paperback and hardback books to defined quality, safety, and productivity standards. Day-to-day responsibilities include setting up and adjusting presses, loading paper and ink, performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting basic mechanical issues, and ensuring accurate color, registration, and print quality. The role also involves coordinating with bindery and finishing teams, following production schedules, completing required documentation, and adhering to health and safety procedures. The Printer will work as part of a shift-based team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, supporting continuous improvement and efficient workflow. Qualifications
Strong practical skills in Print Production and Printing, with experience operating industrial or commercial presses.
Knowledge of Bindery operations and collaboration with finishing teams to ensure seamless end-to-end book production.
Familiarity with Inkjet and other printing technologies, including basic setup, calibration, and quality control.
Ability to provide effective Printer Support, including routine maintenance, troubleshooting minor faults, and escalating technical issues when needed.
Attention to detail, commitment to quality, and ability to follow written specifications and work instructions accurately.
Good numeracy, basic IT skills, and the ability to complete production records and logs reliably.
Comfort working in a physically active, manufacturing environment, including lifting, standing, and shift work as required.
Previous experience in print manufacturing or a related production environment is highly desirable; relevant vocational or technical training is an advantage.
