About the Experience Team

We are hiring in parallel for multiple overlapping roles in the Experience team, including Design Engineers. Apply for whichever role you think suits you best—we can always change your track once we start the process.

Here’s an intro from Jon Lay (Chief Experience Officer):

The Experience Team owns the browser experience of Artificial’s platform. Although the lines between us are intentionally very blurred, we are basically a team of:

• Product Designers, who work directly with customers and lead on UX, research, and product thinking.
• Design Engineers, who own the design-to-browser layer and bring the experience to life in code.
• Product Engineers, who handle deeper back-of-the-frontend (and some backend) work and collaborate with platform teams on scalability.
  
  

Here’s a little flavour of how we operate and what we care about:

• Design and experience as the differentiator. There’s genuine backing for design across the business—we are an active voice in product and commercial strategy, not just the people who put a lick of paint on the work at the end. Shipping an outstanding user experience is key to how we win as a business.

Prototype in code. Although we still use Figma for sketches, annotations and explorations, our primary communication medium for the last 12+ months as a team has been the coded prototype, often accompanied by an explainer video and written note to debate as a team. Rather than debating what might work, we heavily lean towards building a prototype to see whether neat ideas can stand up to reality.

About the roleAs a Product Designer at Artificial, you drive the experience vision for our platform, turning customer insight and research into functional prototypes and feature specifications.

You will:

• Work directly with customers — you’ll have frequent direct contact with customers. Understanding what they actually need — not just what they ask for — is core to the role.
• Own the research and design process — from planning and running user research through to shipped product. Sometimes this will be light validation and discovery work; other times it will be heavier, hypothesis-based research and exploration.
• Work on Bets — we use an adapted Shape Up methodology, alternating between major new feature development (“Bets”) and ongoing iterative improvements. You’ll own design direction on the features your team is building.

Build working prototypes in code that explore interactions, test assumptions, and communicate solutions to the team. You won’t need to own the frontend implementation layer—for that, you’ll have Design Engineers and Product Engineers to collaborate with. But you do need to be comfortable working in code as a medium.

Define how features work, not just how they look — writing RFCs and feature specifications complete enough for the Product Engineers to build upon, covering behaviour, edge cases, and system interactions.

Contribute to the design system — you think in systems. You’ll extend and evolve our shared component library.

Collaborate with engineers — working closely on the implementation layer, providing design direction, critique and context, pushing the quality of what gets built, and engaging seriously in how design decisions translate to code.

Collaborate with other designers — participate in design crits and pairing sessions, give meaningful feedback, and help raise the quality of work across the team.

About youEssential:

• 8+ years working as a product designer.
• Confident with speaking to customers and co-ordinating research. You can plan, run, and synthesise user research independently. You know when research is the right move and when to push forward without it.

Strong visual design and interaction craft. You produce work that’s both clear and considered. You find your own quality issues before anyone else does.

Technical enough to prototype in code. You build meaningful prototypes in React — you don’t rely on Figma to communicate ideas that need to be experienced. You understand enough about frontend and backend engineering to design for it honestly and to produce the first draft of documentation to explain how you believe features should work.

Strong communicator — written and verbal. The RFCs and specifications you write are readable, complete, and hold up without you in the room to explain them.

Thrives with autonomy. You manage your own priorities, communicate proactively, and don’t need someone to tell you what to do next. You’re comfortable navigating uncertainty and balancing competing demands, happy to facilitate sessions with stakeholders (internal and external) to make sense of what should be built.

Desirable:

• Experience in complex domains (insurtech, fintech, healthcare, legal, etc) or B2B SaaS products.
• Experience working at startups or scale-ups.
• Comfortable working from incomplete information. You make partial decisions well and are explicit about what you’re leaving open.
