About The Role
Balfour Beatty is recruiting an experienced Commercial Manager to support delivery of the An Suidhe 275kV Substation in Argyll, a major transmission infrastructure project for SSEN Transmission.
The role will sit within the project delivery team, with responsibility for the commercial management of the civils works package, supporting the successful construction of a new 275kV transmission substation and associated infrastructure.
This is a high‑profile project forming part of SSEN’s Argyll & Kintyre reinforcement programme, strengthening Scotland’s electricity network to support renewable energy and Net Zero ambitions.
The project – An Suidhe Substation
The An Suidhe project involves the construction of a new 275kV substation and associated enabling works in a rural Argyll location, including:
Bulk earthworks and substation platform formation
Reinforced concrete foundations, plinths and structures
Control building and ancillary civil works
Drainage, SuDS and environmental protection measures
Access roads, hardstandings and crane pads
Civils works to support 275kV overhead line connections
As Commercial Manager, you will lead the commercial and financial management of this complex civils scope, working closely with engineering, construction and supply chain partners.
What you'll be doing
Key Responsibilities
Leading the commercial management of the civils package from mobilisation through to completion
Managing contracts, procurement strategy and supply chain performance
Preparing and agreeing target costs, forecasts and commercial reporting
Managing risk, opportunity and change control across the civils works
Leading CVRs, earned value and financial performance reporting
Representing Balfour Beatty’s commercial position with the client and key stakeholders
Supporting buildability and value engineering activities
Managing and developing a project‑based commercial team
Ensuring governance, compliance and best commercial practice are embedded
Who we're looking for
Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline
Chartered or working towards RICS, ICES or CIOB
Strong experience in civils‑heavy infrastructure projects (power, utilities, highways or major construction)
Proven ability to manage live projects and lead commercial teams
Confident working in a project‑based, site environment
Knowledge of NEC or similar industry standard contracts
CSCS card (Professional Qualified Person)
