Description
About The Role
Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering is delivering one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the UK as part of the Geotechnical Sub-Alliance at Sizewell C Nuclear Power Station. This once-in-a-generation project is preparing the ground for the construction of a new nuclear power station through complex geotechnical works including diaphragm walling, piling, soil mixing and grouting. Using specialist equipment such as hydrofraises, hydraulic grabs and large piling rigs, our teams are helping to deliver the critical foundations that will support a major new energy asset for the UK.
As part of this collaborative alliance, we are looking for an experienced Project Manager to lead the safe and successful delivery of major ground engineering works on site.
As Project Manager you will have full accountability for the delivery of key packages of work, ensuring projects are delivered safely, to the highest quality standards, on programme and in line with commercial expectations. You will lead multidisciplinary teams and supply chain partners across operations, engineering, procurement and commercial functions, ensuring strong integration across the project.
You will play a central role in driving NEC4 alliance behaviours, maintaining strong relationships with the client and stakeholders, and ensuring the project continues to operate in a collaborative and high-performance environment. The role requires strategic lea
dership across complex geotechnical works such as diaphragm walling and soil mixing, ensuring operations, plant, design and delivery teams are aligned to achieve project objectives.
What you'll be doing
You will lead the technical and operational delivery of ground engineering activities, ensuring compliance with project specifications, drawings and standards while integrating operations, design, plant, procurement and commercial teams to deliver complex diaphragm wall and soil mixing works.
You will set the vision, standards and behaviours for the project team, developing strong leadership capability across engineers and supervisors while supporting succession planning and performance development. As a senior leader on the project you will also manage key stakeholder and client relationships, representing the business at a strategic level.
Safety leadership is a core element of the role. You will champion the Zero Harm culture, set and monitor safety KPIs, lead major investigations where required and ensure learning and improvement actions are implemented across the project.
You will establish the governance and quality of site briefings, ensuring consistent communication across the project while also delivering high-level briefings to client and safety forums.
Quality leadership will involve setting the project QA strategy and KPIs, ensuring audits are undertaken and corrective actions are implemented, while maintaining the integrit
y of ITPs and quality records and providing clear reporting to the client.
You will define procurement strategy across key plant, materials and services, including strategic supplier engagement and major commitments, while managing long-lead items and ensuring capacity aligns with programme requirements.
The role will also focus heavily on productivity and performance improvement, establishing KPIs for diaphragm wall panels and soil mixing activities and leading improvement initiatives that support programme and commercial outcomes.
You will take ownership of the master programme, ensuring the integrity of logic and critical path, protecting terminal float and directing sequencing and risk responses to maintain delivery targets.
From a commercial perspective you will lead the commercial strategy for your project area, overseeing early warnings, compensation events and negotiations while maintaining full oversight of cost value reconciliation, earned value management and financial forecasting.
You will also provide contractual leadership under the NEC4 Alliance contract, chairing risk reduction meetings, managing change and claims processes and ensuring obligations are appropriately flowed down through subcontractors and partners.
As part of a dynamic site environment, the role may occasionally involve weekend or night working on a rotational basis depending on project requirements.
Who we're looking for
We’re looking for
a strong project leader with significant experience delivering complex construction or infrastructure projects, ideally within ground engineering or geotechnical works. Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and coordinating operations, engineering, commercial and procurement functions is essential.
Candidates will typically have around eight or more years of experience in project leadership roles, although strong candidates with equivalent experience will also be considered. A degree or equivalent industry experience is expected, with management qualifications viewed favourably.
You will hold a CSCS card as a minimum requirement and ideally hold SMSTS certification. Experience or accreditation relating to NEC4 contracts would be advantageous, along with advanced leadership or safety training.
You should have strong technical understanding across disciplines including piling, diaphragm walling or soil mixing and be comfortable overseeing complex interfaces between operations, design, plant and commercial delivery.
The role requires strong programme and commercial governance capability, including experience managing master programmes, critical paths, terminal float strategies and commercial negotiations within major infrastructure projects.
Candidates should also be confident using portfolio scheduling and reporting systems, financial management tools and business intelligence dashboards. Advanced skills in Excel, Word and PowerPoint are expected, along with familiarity with tools such as MS Project or Primavera P6 and contract management platforms such as CEMAR.
Above all, we are looking for a strategic and accountable leader who sets high standards, empowers teams to perform and drives transparent, collaborative working across a complex alliance environment.
