Description

Birmingham Children's Hospital is a leading UK specialist pediatrics center, offering expert care to 90,000 children and young people from across the country every year. Providing the highest quality treatment and care to young patients, supporting their loved ones and advancing medical innovation.

Forming part of the Outpatients Dental Nursing Team, the post holder will undertake a range of duties to support consultants and clinical teams (including Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Maxillofacial Surgery, and Cleft Lip and Palate). This role will include activities such as: providing chair side assistance for patients (including sedation), attending theatre sessions preparing clinical records, radiographs, study models, organising and preparing equipment for clinics including equipment sterilisation. The post holder should have good communication and organisational skills, an enthusiasm to work and flexibility to meet the needs of the service.

A minimum of 2 years' experience is essential. Sedation qualified and experience is desirable, Experience of working with children and adolescents Is desirable. It is imperative to hold a National Examination Board Qualification/City & Guilds NVQ level 3 in Dental Nursing.

KNOWLEDGE & NATURE OF EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Knowledge of range of dental procedures and practices, majority non-routine; acquired through training and experience to diploma level or equivalent plus further knowledge and training in specialist area, e.g. Paediatric Dentistry, Maxillo-facial, Orthodontics, health promotion, Sedation or equivalent level of experience
  • Clearly explain dental procedures and treatment plans to patients, including those who may be anxious, have communication difficulties, or complex medical needs. Effectively communicate with external agencies such as social services, school nurses, and GP practices.
  • Deliver pre-operative and post-operative guidance and instructions for specialised dental procedures, such as orthodontics, maxillofacial treatments, and anaesthesia, while also providing health education.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • A Dental Nurse qualification that enables registration with the General Dental Council i.e. NVQ Level 3, Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing or Dental Nursing National Certificate in Dental Nursing / Gained entry onto GDC register via grand parenting (pre-2008)
  • Registered with the General Dental Council

Desirable

  • Hold a post-registration qualification certificate or equivalent, and provide evidence of continual professional development, where relevant: o Dental Sedation Nursing o Special Care Dental Nursing o Dental Radiography A o Oral Health Education
  • Fluoride Varnish application
  • Experience in oral health promotion
  • ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT SKILLS

    Essential

    • Recognises and prioritises urgent cases, manages triages referrals, fault finding on specialist equipment issues, and adapts responses to meet the specific needs of different client groups, such as children.
