Job Description
The role of the post is to contribute to the research in the development of terahertz (THz) spintronic emitters at Manchester. It is a full-time, on-site position. Working remotely is not possible. The primary focus is on spintronic emitter development and characterisation, involving using and developing terahertz time-domain spectroscopic techniques. However, there will be an element of fabricating metallic multilayer thin-film devices and performing a range of basic magnetic and structural characterisation of the films using a variety of techniques (e.g. vibrating sample magnetometry, x-ray reflectivity). Strong experimental skills are a necessity, as is a willingness to explore new measurement techniques and analysis methods that can lead to fresh insights into the properties of such spin-based emitters.
Main Responsibilities
The main responsibilities of the role include:
• Using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy for the characterisation of multilayer thin-films;
• Further developing terahertz time-domain spectroscopic techniques for the characterisation of spintronic emitters;
• Maintaining a suite of ultrafast laser systems, including oscillator- and amplifier-based systems;
• Sputtering of multilayer thin-films and basic magnetic and structural characterisation using a variety of experimental techniques;
• Analyse/interpret experimental data and draw appropriate conclusions from results;
• Work with collaborations with project partners both in Lancaster and Germany, and develop these relationships through partner site visits, presentation at meetings etc;
• Assist in the planning of the experimental programme;
• Assist in the supervision of graduate students (PhD, MSc) and undergraduate project students, working within the research groups;
• Assist in the running of the research groups by assisting other researchers, organising group activities and maintaining basic laboratory infrastructure;
• Keep up to date with scientific literature, performing regular surveys of published work to inform the direction of the project;
• Write scientific reports and articles for publication, as and when required, with a focus of publishing in international, leading, high-impact journals. Typically, this would involve a minimum of 2 journal papers per year;
• Present results at national and international meetings and conferences, as well as presenting to colleagues and co-workers;
• Engage with the general public in your research by participating in public engagements activities organised by the University (ScienceX, Bluedot festival etc);
• Undertake any additional duties appropriate to the role.
