Main duties of the job
We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic safeguarding professional to join our friendly and welcoming Corporate Safeguarding Team based at University Hospitals Southampton as a Maternity Safeguarding Practitioner for 37.5 hours per week.
The potential candidate will have experience working with families in the antenatal, postnatal and neonatal periods and have an understanding and experience of safeguarding and child protection in this group of families.
We are a small friendly team who are based at Princess Anne Hospital and work closely with UHS Needing Extra Support Teams (NEST), the Adult and Children Safeguarding Team, the Perinatal Mental Health Midwives and Neonatal Family Liaison Team.
You will be reporting to the Named Midwife for Safeguarding Children and the Senior Specialist Safeguarding Practitioner for Maternity services.
You will make strong links with voluntary and statutory agencies to provide support on matters related to safeguarding in the maternity and neonatal settings, including the community and family homes.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The post holder will work as a member of the Safeguarding Team to support the delivery of services to staff involved in the safeguarding of unborn babies, children and families, including supporting liaison between hospital and community services to ensure a safe and appropriate plan of care is made.
UHS Maternity Services is a large tertiary provider of the most complex maternity services including high risk maternal and fetal medicine. We are the tertiary unit for complex neonatal care including surgical patients.
Good understanding of safeguarding in relation to Unborn Babies, Children and Vulnerable Adults.
Good understanding of UK legislation and local guidelines in relation to Safeguarding Adults and Children.
Ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders
Confident in delivering training and supervision to a range of participants
There is some scope for flexible working but you will predominantly be based at Princess Anne Hospital to support the ward staff during core hours.
You will occasionally be asked to attend local children's hubs and New forest Birth Centre to support staff in the community caring for our families.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience
Essential criteria
Registered Midwife / Nurse on relevant part of the NMC Register or registered Social Worker or Allied Health Professional
Diploma or degree in midwifery / nursing or UK recognised qualification in social work e.g. BA Social work, CQSW, Diploma in Social Work or an Allied Health Professional qualification registered with the HCPC
Level 3 safeguarding adults and children
Understanding of local, regional and national guidance and legislation in relation to safeguarding and how it applies to the acute provider.
Experience of working in the multi agency arena to safeguard children and adults
Desirable criteria
Experience of Safeguarding children and adults in a variety of settings
Post qualification experience of leading safeguarding in clinical environments and / or contributing to multi agency safeguarding actions in relation to children and or adults
Training delivery
Understanding and experience of escalation where necessary to ensure effective safeguarding of children and adults
