Job Summary
A vacancy for a part time screening technician/administrator has arisen within the Norfolk and Waveney screening programme. The post plays a pivotal role in the AAA screening programme and we are seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic, flexible and organized screening technician to undertake Abdominal Aortic Ultrasound scanning in the community. You will work as a screening technician carrying out ultrasound techniques to a high standard and in accordance with national standard operating procedures. For applicants not qualified as a screening technician you will be required to undertake the level 3 Health Screener Diploma.Attends office base once a week to ensure image transfer is complete and undertakes administrative duties for the AAA screening programme.
Main duties of the job
The primary purpose of this role is to undertake abdominal ultrasound scanning as part of the community AAA screening programme. The post holder will ensure that men attending clinics are booked smoothly and efficiently and are aware of the benefits and risks of AAA screening programme and give informed consent to the procedure. Our clinics are scheduled across Norfolk and Waveney in various venues e.g. GP practices and hospitals with occasional visits to local prisons to ensure we cover our entire gentlemen in the area. The screening technician will need to have confidence in dealing with people in a caring, safe, supportive and sensitive manner. You must be dedicated, enthusiastic, motivated and hardworking with excellent concentration and powers of perception with the ability to multitask. Flexibility is high on the agenda due to having short notice changes. A good team player is essential with the ability to work alone confidently making unsupervised judgements on patient enquiries and problems. You will need the ability to work under pressure and work to tight deadlines. You must have good organizational skills. Carrying moderate weight equipment needs to be taken from venue to venue. The post holder must hold a full clean British driving license as you are required to drive to various venues daily. A pool car is available for use.

- Deal with anxious patients and their relatives with tact, patience and discretion. Recognise where communication difficulties arise and overcome barriers to understanding.
- Carry out other duties in accordance with the current guidelines and the programme protocol including: obtaining informed consent; putting patients at their ease, explaining the reasons for their invitations and answering any queries.
- Communicate the outcome of the screening test to the man (this may be via his relative or carer or interpreter); provide additional information and offer support appropriate to the outcome/patient pathway.
- Contact patients and arrange and manage appointments system for the Screening Programme. This will include negotiating re arrangement of admissions/appointments over the telephone.
- Deal with messages from clinician and GPs as required, ensuring that the Screening Coordinator is kept fully informed.
- Use knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the abdominal aorta to identify the area to be scanned and any measurements taken which are outside the normal range.
- Apply specialist training and experience to manipulate ultrasound machine controls to gain maximum image optimisation.
- Apply experience and training to deliver outcome of the screening test clearly and correctly.
- Analyse scan data to ensure the quality and other factors meet with agreed protocols. Flag/record any issues as appropriate, decide on course of action from available options and ensure screening office is kept informed.
