The Role

As a Senior Avionics Engineer will be responsible for delivery of quality Avionic System designs within the Aviation Engineering Centre (AEC). We are growing our Uncrewed Air Systems (UAS) capability which boasts a number of UAS platforms as an Original Equipment Manufacturer. Our platforms service over 30 countries worldwide.


Day-to-day, you’ll focus on design, manufacture and provide in service support of existing platform modifications through to prototyping new platforms. This role will also involve solving customer problems and working alongside a wider team of QinetiQ engineers.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Avionic system design including electrical power generation and distribution
  • Flight control systems design and hardware design
  • Command and control design
  • Navigations systems design
  • Avionic system integration of payloads
  • Avionic build and manufacture


Essential experience of the Senior Avionics Engineer:

  • Extensive knowledge of aircraft manufacturing technologies and techniques
  • Extensive knowledge of Aviation Design, Manufacturing and Integration Processes
  • Working knowledge of MAA and CAA Aviation Regulations
  • Robust understanding of their respective engineering discipline
  • Providing advice, assurance and best practice into programmes containing a large element of the relevant engineering capability
  • Significant experience creating technical drawings from 3D Models

  • Essential qualifications for the Senior Avionics Engineer:

    • HNC/HND/Degree in Aeronautical, Electrical, Electronic, Industrial Design or Product Design (or equivalent experience)
    • Computer Aided Design – AutoCAD or Solid Works (Desirable)

    This role is 37 hours per week based at our Boscombe Down site with a minimum average site attendance of four days per week with flexible working available. The role may require periodic travel to other QinetiQ sites such as QinetiQ Ashford and QinetiQ Farnborough.

    MOD Boscombe Down is a unique operational site featuring the longest military runway in the UK. Primarily focusing on providing testing, evaluation and support services for aviation and aerospace systems. Renowned for its extensive flight testing capabilities the site plays a vital role in the UK’s aviation defence contributing to the development, testing and airworthiness of military aircraft enhancing operational readiness and effectiveness.
