This job request is for the role Senior Control & Instrumentation (C&I) Functional Design Engineer who need to work either at Derby/Manchester or from Warrington. Remote working is not enabled.

Role Purpose

As a Senior Control & Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer within the Functional Requirements team, you will lead on the development of the C&I functional specifications for systems across the RR SMR plant. Your work will capture and define the plant’s control functions, ensuring they are structured, and translated into implementable system requirements.

The role includes collaborating closely with C&I architects, system owners, and plant capability teams, supporting technical decision-making and ensuring cross-disciplinary alignment.

Success Criteria

  • Technical Alignment: Demonstrates a clear understanding of RR SMR plant requirements and translates them into C&I that align with overarching plant requirements.
  • Solution Design: Creates well-defined functional designs that meet complex power station objectives that often involve the articulation of complex plant systems and their interdependencies.
  • Vision and Insight: Understands how systems and processes should function to meet future plant needs.

Technical Expertise & Domain Knowledge

  • Broad Technology Understanding: Possesses knowledge of C&I technologies, software, and hardware platforms to inform design choices.
  • Functional Design Expertise: Specialises in functional design, understanding how different components of a system will interact and operate together.
  • Domain-Specific Knowledge: Develops and maintains understanding of the domain context in which the functional architecture operates.

The role of Senior Control & Instrumentation (C&I) Functional Design Engineer reports to C&I Functional Requirements Manager. The Electrical, Control and Instrumentation (EC&I) department has over 100 engineers with over 70 C&I engineers across two C&I systems Groups and over 30 in Electrical System Group with ambitious growth plans in both areas.

This role is for someone who wants to influence the direction of a next‑generation nuclear power plant. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges, leading technical decision‑making, and working across multiple disciplines to ensure a cohesive design.

Work Experience

C&I Systems Design Expertise
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY & COMPETENCY

Experience of Nuclear Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) plant operation and control, or similar industrial experience of plant/system control. Demonstrating knowledge of control theory.

Experience in the systematic design lifecycle of C&I system, including specification, design, assessment, verification, testing, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of power station C&I systems together with understanding of the principles of designing systems to be functionally resilient to faults (such as redundancy and diversity).

Knowledge of principles and concepts, including appropriate industry standards (such as IEC 61508, IEC 61513, IEC 61226 for nuclear industry or similar standards used in other safety critical industries) and regulations that drive good C&I system design. Minimum requirement Mastery level is Level 4 - Outstanding skills & comprehensive practical experience

System Engineering Expertise

Demonstrable understanding of applying a systems engineering approach to design.

Logical mindset and approach to tackling problems.

Experience with key systems engineering methodologies (e.g. Holistic requirements model, Pugh matrix, interface management)

Experience in requirements management or structured verification and use of requirements management tools (e.g. IBM DOORS, Polarian etc).

Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools [Capella preferred]

Minimum requirement Mastery level is Level 4 - Outstanding skills & comprehensive practical experience

Communication And Interpersonal Skills

Experience in taking information, understanding, and presenting it in an appropriate and compelling format, which includes formal communications to the appropriate stakeholders including regulatory bodies.

Excels at communicating complex ideas clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including engineers, management, and other internal and externals customers.
