LEAD ENVIRONMENTAL CLERK OF WORKS (EnviroCoW)

Carbon60 is looking to recruit an experienced Lead Environmental Clerk of Works (EnviroCoW) to support environmental compliance and sustainability activities on a major project in the Highlands, Scotland.

ROLE: Lead EnviroCoW (CIEEM Full Member)


PAY RATE: Negotiable


CONTRACT TYPE: 5 Months - Temporary (Full-Time)


LOCATION: Thurso, Highlands, Scotland


THE ROLE:

The Lead EnviroCoW will play a critical role in ensuring environmental compliance across the project, promoting best practices, and safeguarding sensitive habitats and ecosystems. The position involves site inspections, environmental monitoring, and supporting project teams with sustainability responsibilities while ensuring adherence to all regulatory and planning requirements.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Promote best practices in environmental and sustainability matters across the project

• Conduct regular site inspections to ensure compliance with company policies and statutory regulations

• Ensure adherence to planning conditions, SEPA requirements, and the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP)

• Support and advise project teams on environmental and sustainability responsibilities

• Assist in incident investigations, providing analysis and recommendations to prevent recurrence

• Identify environmental risks early and implement mitigation strategies

• Deliver environmental briefings and toolbox talks to site teams

• Carry out and support pre-construction environmental surveys

• Oversee ecological protection, including sensitive habitats, species, watercourses, and soils

• Manage peat and soil handling, water protection, and pollution control measures

• Ensure compliance with environmental permits, consents, and exemptions

• Maintain accurate records in line with legislation and company procedures

• Collate and report environmental and sustainability data and statistics

• Identify trends and support environmental improvement initiatives and campaigns

• Manage waste and ensure appropriate disposal in line with regulations

• Produce clear, evidence-based reports for clients and regulatory bodies

• Raise and manage non-conformance reports where required


ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Full Member of CIEEM (Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management)

• Proven experience as an Environmental Clerk of Works (EnviroCoW) on construction/infrastructure projects

• Valid protected species licences (e.g., bats, great crested newts, badgers, etc.)

• Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, planning conditions, and compliance requirements

• Experience with environmental inspections, audits, and reporting

• Ability to deliver environmental briefings and engage with site teams

• Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills

• Ability to work independently and manage environmental responsibilities on-site


DESIRABLE:

• Experience working on energy, infrastructure, or substation projects

• Knowledge of SEPA regulations and Scottish environmental legislation

• Experience with peatland and water environment management

• Previous involvement in large-scale construction projects

• Strong stakeholder and client-facing experience
