Senior Legal Counsel – Regulatory

London based

Hybrid working


SSQ is partnering with a leading international banking institution to appoint a Senior Legal Counsel to support its Capital Markets business across Europe & Asia Pacific.


This role sits within the regional legal function and provides strategic, non-contentious financial services regulatory advice to a complex cross-border business operating through regional branches and subsidiaries. The position plays a key role in ensuring compliance with regulatory obligations across multiple jurisdictions, while enabling senior business leaders to achieve commercial objectives within a robust risk management framework.


Reporting into the Head of Legal for the region, this is a high-visibility position offering broad regulatory exposure and direct engagement with senior stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide proactive, strategic legal advice on non-contentious financial services and regulatory matters across Europe & Asia Pacific, including day-to-day statutory interpretation, contract review and new product analysis.
  • Monitor and assess legal and regulatory developments, advising on business impact, regulatory risk and potential opportunities, and ensuring regulatory change initiatives are approached proactively and strategically.
  • Support the negotiation of regulatory-related provisions within commercial agreements and oversee engagement with external counsel across relevant jurisdictions.
  • Lead and coordinate cross-border regulatory knowledge management initiatives and oversee product-specific regulatory advice in partnership with Legal and Compliance.
  • Act as a key member of regional regulatory and governance committees, representing Legal at enterprise and regional forums and supporting corporate governance processes to ensure appropriate oversight and approvals.
  • Identify and escalate legal and regulatory risks to senior management, proposing practical mitigation strategies aligned with business objectives.
  • Work closely with business leaders, oversight functions and executive management to deliver clear, commercially pragmatic advice, collaborating cross-functionally to ensure solutions meet both operational and regulatory requirements while maintaining effective tracking and reporting of legal activity.

  • Candidate Requirements:

    • Qualified lawyer in England & Wales, or another EU jurisdiction, Hong Kong, Singapore or Australia.
    • 5–8 years’ post-qualification experience within financial services regulatory law.
    • Strong technical understanding of regulatory frameworks affecting credit institutions and capital markets businesses operating across multiple jurisdictions.
    • Experience advising on cross-border regulatory matters.
    • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence decision-making at senior levels.
    • Commercially minded, solutions-oriented and comfortable operating in a complex, fast-paced environment.
