Location status: Hybrid Working

Location: Kirkstall Forge, Leeds

Role Type: Permanent

We make health happen

At Bupa, we exist to help people live longer, healthier, happier lives and make a better world. That’s what drives us every day, and it’s why our Legal teams play such a vital part in delivering safe, reliable and trusted healthcare services.

As our new Senior Legal Counsel, Provision & Corporate, you’ll join a supportive team that advises our Provision business units—covering our hospitals, clinics, dental practices and other healthcare services. You’ll help us navigate a complex regulatory landscape, shape corporate and commercial activity, and make sure we’re doing the right thing for our customers, our people and the communities we serve.

This is a role with real influence. You’ll work with senior leaders across Bupa, contribute to high‑profile projects and help strengthen our governance, risk management and operational excellence. If you’re looking for a meaningful career where your expertise helps make health happen, you’ll enjoy making a difference here.

Key Responsibilities

In this role you will:

  • Provide clear, strategic and practical legal advice to the Provision business units on corporate and commercial matters.
  • Support on major transactions, including mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures, as well as business or asset transfers and large‑scale commercial arrangements.
  • Work closely with Legal Directors to identify, escalate and report material risks, ensuring senior stakeholders have what they need to make informed decisions.
  • Build strong relationships across the business, contributing to executive, risk and project committees as a trusted adviser.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records within our Legal matter management platform, helping us track and improve the effectiveness of our work.
  • Act as lead counsel when working with external law firms—monitoring fees, assessing performance and ensuring value for money.
  • Stay ahead of key legal developments, especially in healthcare regulation, and help the business understand how changes could affect commercial and operational activity.
  • Play an active role in developing our legal knowledge base, templates, guidance and best‑practice processes.
  • Support the ongoing identification and management of legal risks, including reporting into relevant Bupa Group committees.

  • What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who brings:

    • Significant experience advising on complex corporate transactions essential, including private M&A, commercial agreements and organisational restructures.
    • A strong understanding of healthcare regulation—or the ability to quickly learn the essentials—with the confidence to spot issues early and know when to seek specialist input.
    • Experience working in‑house at a senior level, including influencing leadership stakeholders and supporting change in a dynamic environment.
    • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, with the ability to turn complicated legal matters into clear, straightforward language.
    • Strong judgement, attention to detail and the ability to balance legal, commercial and operational considerations.
    • A collaborative working style — you’ll be someone who builds trust, stays calm under pressure and enjoys working as part of a wider legal community.

    Benefits

Our benefits are designed to make health happen for our people. Viva is our global wellbeing programme and includes all aspects of our health – from mental and physical, to financial, social and environmental wellbeing. We support flexible working and have a range of family friendly benefits.

Joining Bupa in this role you will receive the following benefits and more:

    • 25 days’ holiday (increasing with service) with the option to buy or sell days.
  • Bupa health insurance (benefit in kind).
  • Enhanced pension plan and life insurance.
  • Annual performance bonus – based on company and individual performance
  • Onsite gyms or local discounts where no onsite gym is available.
  • A wide range of other benefits and online discount

  • Why Bupa
