Band 7 Senior Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse
37.5 hours per week | 12-month Fixed Term Contract

Our paediatric diabetes service is growing from strength to strength, driven by a supportive and ambitious multidisciplinary team committed to transforming the way we deliver care. We are looking for a dynamic, motivated individual who enjoys thinking creatively and is eager to help shape innovative, accessible services for our patients and families.
As a Senior Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse, you will play a key role within our dedicated MDT, bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm to support continued service development and high-quality patient care.
We are seeking a nurse with a genuine passion for diabetes care and improving outcomes for children and young people. In return, we offer a comprehensive development pathway, including support to undertake specialist training that will further enhance your skills and professional growth.
You will receive ongoing support and mentorship within a welcoming cross-site nursing team, led by an experienced Matron. Although primarily based at Frimley Park Hospital, you will be part of a wider collaborative service, providing excellent opportunities to learn, develop, and broaden your experience.

Main duties of the job
To take the leading role in the advanced assessment, treatment, and management of children with diabetes within inpatients and outpatients.
To act as a clinical lead for the Paediatric diabetes services
To review and educate all children and young people
To develop comprehensive care plans for CYP
To be highly skilled in the advanced clinical assessment and advanced management of CYP with diabetes
To provide advanced information, education, advice, and support to the CYP, parents, ward staff and schools.
Working in a demanding environment, the successful applicant will be required to:
Lead on a designated clinic and independently manage a case load of CYPs.
Use excellent communication skills.
Have advanced and extensive knowledge and clinical skills to manage CYP with diabetes, aetiology, and treatment.
Have experience of working autonomously and as a member of the nursing team/MDT
Be confident and competent in their role and have a willingness to develop their skills.
Have excellent organisational, prioritisation and problem-solving skills.
Have the experience and expertise of supporting and teaching ward staff, families, and other professionals such as schools
Have the ability to work flexibly and manage change in a positive and effective way.
Demonstrate resilience with a fast paced and unpredictable workload.
Lead in quality improvement projects involving audits
Manage junior staff
Hold strong leadership and management skills

Qualifications
Essential criteria
Registered Child branch or Registered Sick Children's Nurse (RSCN).
Recognised Post graduate Paediatric Diabetes Qualification
Independent Non-Medical Prescribing qualification (Active on the NMC register) or willingness to undertake.
Teaching qualification or equivalent, willingness to undertake, or equivalent experience.
Desirable criteria
Educated to MSc Degree level in Paediatric diabetes
Leadership development programme or willingness to undertake leadership training.
Advanced Communication Skills Training.
Completed / completing a Master’s pathway.
Experience
Essential criteria
Significant demonstrable experience within paediatric diabetes care with evidence of professional development within this specialism.
Previous experience of formal / informal teaching of CYP’s & staff.
Experience in managing paediatric diabetes CYP’s in the hospital and community settings.
Evidence of developing policy, guidelines and managing resources.
Previous practice development experience.
Desirable criteria
Previous experience in audit and evaluation.
Experience in acting as a clinical supervisor and mentor to others
Extensive diabetes experience.
Previous experience of providing support via an on-call service during evenings and weekends.
Skills
Essential criteria
Direct care skills in hospital and community settings (i.e. Insulin dose adjustment, able to lead on pump starts and CGM starts, history taking, assessment, treatment and evaluation in relation to diabetes).
Advanced clinical assessment skills and ability to make autonomous clinical decisions and judgments.
Coaching and mentoring skills
IT literate-keyboard and word processing skills.
Completed band 7 PDSN competencies.
Excellent communication skills
Desirable criteria
Understanding of health policy and the national and local nursing agenda.
Database management.
Clinical audit.
Application of management/leadership skills and autonomous practice.
