Description
About The Role
This is not a typical Senior Quantity Surveyor role.
We are seeking a self‑motivated Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our Power Commercial team, supporting one of the largest and most significant energy infrastructure programmes in Scotland. The role has a strong focus on commercial risk management, procurement, audit, and value for money, whilst leading and mentoring a small commercial team.
You will sit at the heart of the commercial function, working closely with project teams, the Audit function, Commercial Services, and procurement colleagues, ensuring robust commercial governance, best‑practice processes, and compliant contract management across the portfolio.
This opportunity would suit an experienced SQS or Managing QS who is ready to take the next step, broaden their exposure into commercial assurance and leadership, and play a key role in developing a growing team.
What you'll be doing
Lead commercial risk management, identifying, analysing and mitigating risks and opportunities across projects.
Manage NEC contract obligations, including early warnings, compensation events, CVRs, CTCs, and change control.
Provide commercial assurance, working alongside the Audit team to support audits, governance, procedures and compliance.
Support and challenge project teams to ensure value for money, cost certainty and strong commercial decision‑making.
Oversee and support subcontract procurement, working closely with Commercial Services and supply chain partners.
Ensure robust commercial processes, controls and reporting are embedded and followed consistently.
Manage cost control, forecasting and reporting across projects or work packages.
Line manage and mentor a small commercial team, providing day‑to‑day coaching, development support and knowledge sharing.
Act as a point of escalation for complex commercial and contractual matters.
Build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, clients and external partners.
Who we're looking for
You’ll bring a strong commercial background with the confidence to operate beyond a traditional Senior QS role, combining technical expertise with leadership, risk awareness and a value‑focused mindset.
Strong experience working with NEC3 / NEC4 contracts, including early warnings, compensation events, CVRs and cost forecasting (CTCs).
Demonstrable experience identifying, managing and mitigating commercial risks and opportunities.
Exposure to commercial audit, assurance or governance processes, with the ability to apply robust controls and procedures.
Experience supporting or leading procurement and subcontract management, with a clear focus on value for money.
Proven ability to lead, mentor and coach junior commercial staff, acting as a positive role model within the team.
Confident communicator, able to engage effectively with internal teams, clients and auditors.
Commercially astute, with strong business and customer awareness, aligned to organisational objectives.
Proactive, achievement‑focused and resilient, with the ability to recognise threats and capitalise on opportunities.
Collaborative team player with the confidence to challenge, influence and support project teams.
