About the Project & Role
We are forming a dedicated, elite Cloud Migration Taskforce at Booking.com to lead a high-stakes, large-scale modernization initiative. This is not a business-as-usual feature delivery role. You will be part of a specialized strike team responsible for migrating our existing estate to a new cloud architecture, with a hard target of successfully moving 16 core services this year.
Because this project spans our entire product stack, you won’t be siloed in one team's domain. You will work across the whole product system, tackling complex dependencies, data migrations, and schema evolutions.
What You’ll Do
- Drive End-to-End Migration: Architect and execute the migration of critical backend services from our existing estate to the target cloud platform.
- Write & Modernize Code: Pair-program and build robust backend systems primarily utilizing Java and Spring Boot.
- Leverage GenAI Tools: Actively incorporate approved AI-assisted coding tools (like Claude) to accelerate code generation, refactoring, documentation, and migration workflows responsibly.
- Own Production Data Evolution: Manage complex data migrations, schema updates, and production data change management with zero downtime.
- Build Infrastructure as Code: Establish deployment automation and utilize CI/CD pipelines to ensure safe, repeatable deployments.
What We Are Looking For
We need a pragmatic, hands-on Engineer (Medium to Senior level) who excels in ambiguous environments and loves the challenge of infrastructure change.
Must-Have Technical Skills:
- Strong Java & Spring Boot Fundamentals: Deep technical knowledge of the ecosystem, including testing best practices and framework capabilities.
- Heavy AWS Cloud Expertise: Proven experience building, operating, and migrating cloud-based architectures. (Cross-cloud migration experience is highly valued).
- Proven Migration Experience: Direct experience with cloud migrations, platform modernization, data migrations, and managing schema evolution.
- DevOps & SRE Mindset: Comfortable running CI/CD pipelines, writing Infrastructure as Code, and supporting production services (monitoring, alerting, incident response).
- AI-Assisted Engineering: Hands-on experience using GenAI tools (like Claude) productively and with strong engineering judgement.
Core Soft Skills:
- Cross-Team Communication: You will interact with multiple product domains; the ability to communicate technical trade-offs clearly and collaborate across teams is essential.
- Pragmatic Problem Solving: A focus on safe, steady delivery over perfection.
