The
Band 6 Specialist Pharmacy Technician Dispensary is a key operational role responsible for coordinating the day-to-day delivery of dispensary services, ensuring efficient workflow and achievement of key performance indicators. The post holder works closely with the Dispensary Manager, supporting team activities while maintaining high standards of patient care, safety and compliance with medicines legislation.
The role requires a proactive and experienced registered Pharmacy Technician who can work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. A strong focus is placed on leadership, service improvement and upholding organisational values, with the post holder actively contributing to the smooth running of services across the Trust.
Main duties of the job
- Coordinate daily dispensary operations and workflow.
- Dispense and accuracy check prescriptions in line with legal and professional standards.
- Supervise pharmacy assistants and support staff training and development.
- Manage prescription tracking systems and ensure timely medicine supply.
- Oversee controlled drugs processes, ensuring compliance and accurate records.
- Maintain stock control, including stock checks, expiry monitoring, and discrepancy resolution.
- Support rota planning, service delivery and issue resolution.
- Contribute to audits, SOP updates and service improvement initiatives.
Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The post holder is responsible for supporting the operational management of the dispensary, including coordinating prescription workflow, ensuring timely supply of medicines and maintaining compliance with legal and professional standards. This includes dispensing and accuracy checking prescriptions, managing prescription tracking systems, supervising staff and supporting the safe handling and supply of controlled drugs.
The post holder will contribute to the ongoing development of mental health pharmacy services by applying knowledge of psychotropic medicines and an understanding of mental health conditions and therapeutic approaches, supporting service improvements and optimising patient outcomes.
In addition, the role involves leadership and training responsibilities such as supervising pharmacy assistants and trainees, contributing to staff development and supporting service improvements. The post holder also ensures effective stock control measures, maintains accurate records, contributes to audits and governance processes and supports the continuous delivery of high-quality, patient-centred pharmacy services
Starting with NELFT
NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.
Probationary Period
This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).
High Cost Area Supplement Outer London (B&D, Redbridge, Havering and Waltham Forest)
This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £4,714 to a maximum of £5,941 p.a. pro rata for part time).
