Job Overview

We are looking to appoint specialty doctors in anaesthetics for an initial 3-month period with the possibility of contract extension. Interests including:

  • General Anaesthesia and perioperative medicine
  • Trauma and Orthopaedics
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The jobs are full-time posts comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs). The majority of this activity will be dedicated to anaesthetic sessions during the week. There will be a requirement to cover a weekend trauma list once a month or a bank holiday.

Candidates should be in position to take up the role immediately

Main duties of the job

The post has arisen to meet the demand driven by the expansion of theatre activity and retirements.

Job Planning

The Job Plan will be a prospective agreement between the appointee and the chief of service, that sets out a specialty doctor’s duties, responsibilities and objectives for the

coming year. It covers all aspects of a specialty doctor’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research and education and managerial responsibilities.

One half day per month is dedicated to audit and teaching during which time all routine work is suspended. All staff are expected to attend except for those providing emergency care cover and those on leave. The directorate meeting is also held at this time. It is assumed that every member of the department will play a full part in formal and informal teaching of medical and other staff, and this is recognized as part of Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).

CPD/ Study Leave

All members of the department are encouraged to take study leave and will be expected to undertake CME in line with the Royal College of Anaesthetists CPD requirements.

On-Call Commitments

There is no on-call commitment although, successful candidates will be expected to join the weekend trauma rota with an expectation to cover seven Saturdays over the year and one bank holiday.

Essential criteria

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Primary FRCA or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • MRCP or similar qualification
  • Postgraduate qualification in perioperative medicine
  • Qualification in regional anaesthesia

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Able to evaluate own clinical practice.
  • Able to demonstrate innovative thinking.
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to organise and develop service provision.
  • Understanding the structures of NHS hospitals and willing to play a role in the Department and in the Hospital

Desirable criteria

  • Good IT skills

Experience

Essential criteria

  • A wide grounding of all aspects of anaesthesia
  • Provider status in ATLS ALS and PALS (or equivalent)
  • Willingness to teach undergraduate and post graduates particularly, in the weekly protected trainee teaching sessions
  • Understand principles and participated in audit activity
  • Previously working independently in a UK health setting for more than one year
