Sterile Services Technician | Spire Murrayfield Hospital - Edinburgh | Full time - 3 x 12.5 hour shifts per week | Permanent
Spire Murrayfield Hospital is looking for a Sterile Services Technician to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, assisting the Sterile Service Department Lead in maintaining high-quality standards through the delivery of sterile medical devices to service users.
The SST will take responsibility for the receipt, production, assembly and distribution of all sterile surgical instrument sets and sterile supplementary instruments (re)processed within the sterile service department (SSD).
The ideal candidate will undertake duties in accordance with the current legislation, national guidance, Spire Healthcare policies, the department’s established quality management system and procedures at all times throughout the decontamination cycle, thus ensuring safe systems are adhered to for patient safety.
Duties And Responsibilities
- (Re)process complex surgical instrumentation across a range of specialities that are contaminated with blood and body fluids
- Physically push trolleys, lift sets repeatedly, load/unload autoclaves/washers, and have the dexterity to inspect surgical instruments sets
- Operate machinery used for the (re)processing of surgical instrumentation i.e. washer-disinfectors, heat sealers, ultrasonic baths, autoclaves etc
- Use computers for traceability of items (re)processed &/or legible completion of manual traceability forms
- Reprocess potentially contaminated surgical instrumentation MRSA, MSSA, Hep B, Hep C, HIV and follow IPC guidance
- Check the parameters of the washer-disinfector after each cycle to ensure the correct parameters have been achieved before releasing into the clean room
- Inspection and reassemble surgical instrumentation/equipment to a high-quality standard
- Wrap and pack surgical instrument sets within a clean room environment via approved methods to ensure the integrity of the wrap/packing is maintained to a quality standard
- Sterilise instrumentation/equipment via use of the autoclaves, ensuring the appropriate sterilisation cycle is chosen
- Check parameters of each successful sterilisation cycle and ensure required parameters have been achieved before releasing the load from the autoclave into the cooling/dispatch area
- Collect used equipment from designated collection points within the hospital, ensuring correct transportation systems are used when collecting used instrumentation
- Assist in the stock control of the department as per schedules and the re-ordering system
The Ideal Candidate
- Good level of literacy
- Basic awareness of health, safety and hygiene
- Flexible working within shift duties
- Previous experience as a Sterile Services Technician
