Job Overview
This post is a new and exciting opportunity supporting the Renal and Transplant Service within North Bristol NHS Trust two days a week to improve the environmental impact of the service whilst also creating safer, more resilient and patient-centred kidney units. The role is funded by Southmead Hospital Charity on a fixed term contract for 18 months.
The post will look across the whole kidney care pathway identifying greatest areas of impact and opportunities for improvement and coordinating projects to address these. The post will be responsible for monitoring and reporting the impact of specific interventions on patient and staff including carbon and cost savings.
The postholder will communicate with and engage staff and patients to raise awareness of sustainable kidney care and to implement lasting change. The postholder will also collaborate with various stakeholders throughout the kidney care pathway to review the evidence for interventions and rewrite protocols.
A key focus of this role will be to identify measures to improve uptake of dialysis and transplantation and to identify measures to focus on primary prevention of kidney disease.

Sustainability in Kidney Care
- Review national guidelines and best practice to identify opportunities to reduce carbon footprint, waste, and resource use in kidney care pathways.
- Observe clinical practice and identify opportunities to reduce carbon footprint, waste, and resource use in kidney care pathways.
- Support the integration of sustainability principles into renal services, including dialysis, transplantation, and inpatient / outpatient care.
- Promote sustainable procurement and use of medical equipment, consumables, and energy-efficient practices.
- Identify measures to improve uptake of peritoneal dialysis and transplantation and primary prevention of kidney disease. [MP1]
- Contribute to audits, research, and evaluation projects to measure environmental impact and patient outcomes.
- Maintain an accurate record of performance indicators.
- Develop and implement action plans aligned with NHS sustainability targets and renal service priorities.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Patient and Staff Engagement
- Work with patients, carers, and staff to raise awareness of sustainable kidney care practices.
- Deliver training sessions, workshops, and educational materials to promote behavioural change.
- Liaise with multidisciplinary teams including dialysis units leads and engineers, nephrologists, nurses, dietitians, estates, facilities and procurement staff.
- Collaborate with regional and national sustainability networks and forums to share best practice.
- Attend conferences to network and present work.
- Support partnership working with charities, patient groups, and community organisations.
- Ensure compliance with NHS policies, clinical governance standards, and sustainability frameworks.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and case studies demonstrating progress for the monthly Renal Team Meeting and Sustainable Healthcare Collaboration.
Education/Training/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Degree-level qualification in health sciences, nursing, medical science or equivalent experience

- Degree or postgraduate qualification in sustainability, healthcare management or renal services

- Experience working in healthcare
- Experience in project delivery, quality improvement, or implementing environmental initiatives
- Experience contributing to audits, research, or quality improvement projects

- Experience writing procedures, protocols or policies and reporting into clinical governance.
- Experience of engaging with patient groups, charities, or community organisations
- Experience specifically within renal services or kidney care

- Awareness of clinical governance, audit, and data protection
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Knowledge of kidney care pathways, dialysis services, transplantation, and patient-centred kidney care.
- Familiarity with NHS procurement processes and sustainable supply chain management
- Ability to design and deliver training programmes
- Skills in stakeholder engagement at regional/national level
