Description
Within NHS England, South East Region, the Wessex Local Office is responsible for the planning, development, education and training of the future and current healthcare and public health workforce across Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Salisbury.

An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant with a strong interest in medical education and training to be the Director of Special Interest Training Modules (SITM) and Advanced training for Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Applications are invited from current STC members, or from those within the specialty who can demonstrate relevant interest in education and training.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall delivery of the training programme. For more information regarding the post please refer to the attached Job Description with enclosed Person Specification.

The role of the Director of Special Interest Training Modules (SITM) and Advanced training for Obstetrics and Gynaecology is to work with the Head of School in leading the delivery of a wide range of functions, aligned to NHS England mandate.

The SITM Director will be aware of all training opportunities within the region and will coordinate the trainee attachments, ensuring all trainees can fulfil their SITM training objectives. This individual must take responsibility for the quality management, standards and delivery of training of all SITMs using the RCOG Training Unit Quality Criteria . This will be achieved by empowering the SITM Preceptors to ensure the standards are delivered for their allocated SITM(s). Good liaison with SITM Preceptors is vital and it is suggested that regular meetings are established at deanery level.

Role

The method by which any individual SITM Director will undertake their role is dependent upon the size of the deanery and the communication links. It is recommended that the SITM Director provides guidance that is widely available to trainees regarding:

  • the availability of SITMs in the region
  • the region’s preferred selection process
  • what should happen if requests for an SITM exceed the region’s training capacity

SITM training is open to training and non-training grades; however, it is acknowledged that as national training number (NTN) holders require two SITMs for Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) registration, these trainees will be given priority when training opportunities exist.

The SITM Director can also be an SITM Preceptor, SITM Educational Supervisor or both. This educational role should be appointed in open competition as per deanery processes.
