The National Youth Advocacy Service (NYAS) is a dedicated charity that empowers care-experienced children and young people. NYAS offers a range of vital services, including a national advocacy helpline, assistance for children in care or in need, and providing independent visitors for children in care. NYAS is committed to protecting the rights of young people and ensuring they have a voice in decisions that affect their lives.


Role Description

This is a volunteer remote role for a Volunteer Befriender (Independent Visitor). In this role, you will develop a positive, trusting relationship with a young person in care by meeting regularly and offering emotional support, encouragement, and guidance. You will participate in social, leisure, or cultural activities with the young person to help them build confidence and enjoy positive experiences. Your involvement will aim to bring consistency and inspiration into their lives.


Qualifications

  • Empathy, patience, and ability to build trust-based relationships with young people
  • Strong communication and active listening skills
  • Reliability, consistency, and ability to commit long-term to the role
  • Understanding of safeguarding principles and adherence to confidentiality policies
  • Willingness to undergo training and a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check
  • Ability to provide emotional support, motivate, and instill confidence in young people
  • Experience in mentoring or working with children is an asset but not mandatory
