To support the delivery a professional Nurse Led Dermatology service, ensuring the highest possible standards of care are delivered to our Dermatology patients.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensures the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of patients, relatives and colleagues is respected at all times.
To be courteous and helpful to patients, families/carers, colleagues and all users to the trust.
Act as a role model, accountable for own practice, demonstrating high standards of care and providing exemplary clinical supervision and management of nurses working within dermatology.
Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of infection control policies, local strategy with practical experience and principles in relation to the clinical environment, patient care, the prevention of cross infection, outbreak management, good hand hygiene and environmental cleaning.
Leading, demonstrating and implementing appropriate highly specialist practice within the Dermatology setting.
Work within National requirements for Dermatology Nursing.
Ensure effective communication, both written and verbal, in the interest of patient care and with the multidisciplinary team in line with the organisation policy to ensure the safe and effective management of patients during and after their Dermatology appointment/treatment.
To undertake assessment of individuals using a range of different assessment methods, including physical examination, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests.
To work in a safe competent manner working within agreed protocols and guidelines.
Ideally, to be a competent a non-medical prescriber.
Actively involves patients, relatives and carers in their treatment and encourages staff to facilitate and enable individuals to assist in their own treatments.
Proactively seeks patients', carers' and families' feedback on the service provided, making changes as necessary.
Use their professional knowledge and judgement to manage Dermatology conditions and attend dermatology updates and study updates to maintain knowledge and revalidation.
Attend and Dermatology multi-disciplinary team meetings, present and discuss any relevant cases.
Ensures respectful interactions when communicating highly sensitive/difficult information, including breaking bad news, and provide subsequent support of patients, relatives, carers and colleagues as appropriate.
Demonstrates highly specialist knowledge, skills and innovative practice, underpinned by a sound evidence base and acting as a source of expertise.
Working in partnership with Clinical Lead and Business/General Manager in achievement of access, cancer, governance and financial performance.
Continually seek ways to develop, implement and evaluate patient pathways in collaboration with colleagues internal and external to the Trust
Managerial Responsibilities
Responsible for the management and leadership of the Dermatology nurses, maintaining an appropriate management style that maintains good morale, a team approach to work and a culture which fosters innovation and positive change.
Practice the Trust values and the NHS Constitution. Can articulate a compelling vision for the department/organisation.
Identify workforce requirements relating to Dermatology nurses and to lead on the effective recruitment, retention and management of staff including appraisals, performance, management and sickness absence.
Using e-roster, manage the duty rotas to meet the short and long term requirements of the clinical area considering the needs of the patients and the skill mix requirements in relation to acuity and dependency. Escalates and records concerns with regard to staffing within the appropriate timescales.
Ensures Dermatology nurses undertake the necessary clinical and mandatory training required for their related area and that any related competencies are signed off.
Ensure that new nursing staff are welcomed to the department, supported to undertake the departmental induction and orientation programme.
Represent the team and organisation at professional meetings as requested and feedback information. Ensure there is a method of communication that reaches all staff within the team considering different working patterns.
Articulate clear instructions or actions, outlines the related quality standards expected and provides a balanced feedback on a one to one basis.
In collaboration with the Clinical Lead for Dermatology, lead on clinical audit across dermatology services.
To lead on the assessment, monitoring and management of risk within area of practice, working within the clinical governance framework to improve service quality.
To attend Dermatology meetings, at both a local and national level.
Maintain competent computer skills and be able to access patient details and reports via the Trusts IT systems.
Resource Management
Provide advice with regard to the purchase and commissioning of resources relating to the specialty.
Ensure that all medical equipment are kept in a safe condition and is ready for use when required, and that faulty equipment is reported and/or replaced as necessary.
Responsibility for ensuring equipment is correctly used and maintained.
Act as an authorised signatory for Dermatology nursing budget.
Governance, Quality and Effectivenes
Investigates complaints, drafts responses as required and implements changes following investigations within the time frames stipulated.
Participate in Departmental/Directorate governance meetings
Ensure relevant quality targets are met within sphere of responsibility
Prepare for and participate in external audits or inspections, e.g. Care Quality Commission visits, including local CQC reviews
Responsibility for Quality Performance Monitoring. Presenting specialised information relating to service development, delivery, evaluation and clinical practice across the directorate, wider trust and external to the trust
Work collaboratively with the Clinical Lead and the Business/ General Manager for Specialty Medicine in the review and modification of business plans to meet future needs of the service.
Lead responsibility for the development and implementation of policies, procedures, guidelines and standards relating to clinical role, ensuring practice is based on best evidence, including the interpretation of national guidance at local level.
Contribute to the Trusts corporate planning, policy and decision-making processes.
Demonstrating continuous evaluation of practice including the use of recognised outcome measures and audit tools.
Promoting and disseminating current research and audit findings.
Foster a culture of inquiry, research and innovation across dermatology
Professional and Legal Responsibilities
To be conversant with policies and procedures relating to Fire and Health and Safety.
To report all accidents and complaints in accordance with agreed policies and assist in investigations of complaints and accidents as required
Ensure own professional/educational/training needs are identified and maintains own mandatory and professional updating in order to maintain clinical and professional credibility. Maintains professional revalidation.
Clinical study to fulfil professional registration requirements and show evidence of continuing professional development.
Ensure own and others practice is in line with NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times.
To be conversant with all the nursing and Dermatology policies and procedures.
Will seek out Best Practice to generate new ideas and generate change.
Understands how their department relates to the overall objectives of the organisation and the wider health economy.
Education, Training and Development
Demonstrate a highly developed understanding of clinical practice with effective supervision, mentoring and assessment skills.
Participate in Trust education and training programmes appropriately and feeds back knowledge gained to their team.
Identify own Personal Development needs, clinical competency deficits, education and development needs at own appraisal, demonstrating alignment with Trust corporate objectives.
Provide clinical advice as required to staff, patients and carers, which promotes evidence, based clinical practice and reduces risk to patients.
Participate in clinical training including teaching and supervision of new staff, pre professional and student nurses in the unit environment.
Conduct training needs analysis (TNA) based on staff appraisal and local service requirements annually. Negotiate training support as per TNA. Evaluate training own staff have undertaken to effect service improvement and that individuals have gained new knowledge or skills.
To ensure that all staff have an appraisal and Personal Development Plan and meet their personal objectives. Supports the education and development of Dermatology nurses.
