Health and Safety Advisor

NHS Band 5: Salary £32,073 - £39,043 per annum

Hours per Week: 37.5 full time

Contract: Permanent

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Health and Safety Advisor to join our Single Corporate Health and Safety Service, supporting both Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Health and Safety professional who wants to develop their career within a large, complex acute NHS environment, working closely with managers and frontline teams to promote a strong, positive safety culture and ensure compliance with health and safety legislation.

Job purpose

To ensure both Trusts meet their legal and regulatory obligations associated with health and safety management and to ensure that there are robust arrangements in place to continue to be well led organisations.

Experience

Essential

• Ability to communicate information to individuals/groups/committees in a comprehensive way.
• Ability to plan and organise basic activities or programmes underpinning relevant H&S topics and legislative requirements.
• Confident in preparing and delivering basic written reports.
• Confident to deliver training, presentations and/or reports to individuals, groups and or committees.
• Ability to work autonomously, and as part of a team with integrity and confidentiality, managing own workload and demands.

Confident to communicate and share best practice in Health and Safety to multidisciplinary groups and all levels of staff throughout the organisation.

Ability to handle difficult or complex situations with compassion and sensitivity.

Desirable

• Project management.
• Experience of working within a care/ healthcare/NHS environment.

Qualifications

Essential

• Specialist qualification in Occupational Health and Safety at Work (EG NEBOSH Cert) or significant, demonstrable relevant experience.

Desirable

• Training Qualification. Patient Handling experience / knowledge.
• Moving & Handling trainers' certificate.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

• Have knowledge of legislation and regulations relevant to scope of role.
• Competent in the use of a wide range of software e.g. Microsoft office, Risk Management system, SharePoint.

Desirable

• Ability to make sound professional judgement on a broad range of Health and safety issues, with the autonomy to intervene where unsafe practice is identified.

The single corporate service is delivered across both organisations. You may be based at either IWT or PHU and individuals may be required to undertake business travel between sites.
