Kings has established itself as a premier centre for minimally invasive heart valve surgery, offering patients the full spectrum of limited-access surgical approaches. The programme encompasses minimally invasive mitral valve repair and replacement via right mini-thoracotomy, minimally invasive tricuspid valve surgery, mini-sternotomy aortic valve replacement, and endoscopic aortic valve replacement.
The unit's minimally invasive valve programme is supported by a dedicated team of three subspecialty consultants with extensive experience in these technically demanding procedures, consistently achieving results that compare favourably with the best internationally published outcomes. Patients benefit from reduced surgical trauma, shorter intensive care and hospital stays, faster return to normal activity, and improved cosmetic outcomes compared with conventional open surgery.
The appointment involves a balanced distribution of time across cardiac theatres, the ward, and outpatient clinics, ensuring a well-rounded clinical experience throughout the fellowship. The unit is supported by three dedicated minimally invasive cardiac surgery consultants, providing the fellow with exceptional operative exposure and mentorship. The fellow will have the opportunity to develop proficiency in the full spectrum of minimally invasive cardiac surgical techniques. Training will be delivered in a progressive and structured manner.
The fellow will advance from assisted participation through to primary operating under supervised consultant guidance, in keeping with their evolving competency and experience. It is anticipated that by the conclusion of the fellowship, the post-holder will have accumulated a substantial operative logbook reflective of a high-volume minimally invasive practice, positioning them competitively for a consultant post with a dedicated minimally invasive cardiac surgery remit.
