The post holder will work as an independent, specialist Cardiac Physiologist, delivering a high-quality, patient-centred service across a wide range of non-invasive and invasive cardiac diagnostic investigations. They will be responsible for the performance, analysis, and reporting of complex diagnostic tests, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely patient care.
The role will be primarily based within Cardiac Suite 6 and the Cardiac Catheter Laboratories, with a requirement for flexible working to meet service demands. A collaborative, cross-functional team approach is essential to support efficient service delivery across the department.
This position provides an excellent opportunity to develop specialist expertise in areas such as Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET), interventional and structural cardiology, and complex Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM), supported by ongoing professional development.
The post holder will demonstrate strong organisational skills, flexibility, and reliability, with a commitment to teaching and supporting junior staff and students. Rotation across cardiac physiology services is required to maintain competencies, alongside participation in the emergency on-call rota, including primary angioplasty and emergency arrhythmia pathways.
Technical and Service Delivery
The post-holder will deliver a high-quality, patient-centred cardiac physiology service across a broad range of non-invasive and invasive diagnostic modalities, demonstrating advanced clinical competence, sound judgement, and professional accountability.
You will independently perform, analyse, and report ambulatory ECG monitoring, including event recorders, alongside resting and ambulatory blood pressure studies, ensuring accurate interpretation and timely reporting in line with departmental and national standards.
You will supervise and support a range of advanced diagnostic investigations, including Exercise Tolerance Testing (ETT), Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET), and Head-Up Tilt Testing (HUTT), taking responsibility for the accurate analysis and reporting of findings in accordance with local and national guidelines.
Within the cardiac catheterisation laboratory, you will competently support and document haemodynamic monitoring and procedural activity across diagnostic, interventional and structural heart procedures, including PCI, IVUS, OCT, shockwave therapy, rotablation, IABP, Impella, TAVI, MitraClip/TEER, LAAO and PFO closure. You will ensure precise procedural recording and contribute to maintaining high standards of patient safety and clinical governance.
The role includes participation in the primary angioplasty on-call rota and/or emergency arrhythmia pathway, contributing to the delivery of urgent and life-saving cardiac services.
You will provide specialist physiologist support across a range of cardiac device procedures, including loop recorder implantation and explantation, pacemaker implantation, and complex cardiac device procedures (ICD and CRT systems), as well as generator replacements. You will take an active role in the ongoing follow-up and management of these devices, both within clinic settings and through remote monitoring platforms, ensuring safe, effective, and patient-centred care.
You will independently programme and optimise complex cardiac devices, including conduction system pacing (LBBaP), ICD, and CRT systems, ensuring optimal device function and therapeutic delivery. You will maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation within electronic patient records and clinical databases, supporting continuity of care, audit, and compliance with clinical governance standards.
You will demonstrate strong organisational and prioritisation skills, managing your workload effectively across competing clinical demands, and ensuring timely delivery of investigations and reports.
You will also support the triage and prioritisation of inpatient referrals, liaising effectively with ward teams and multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure appropriate allocation of resources.
The post-holder will contribute to effective stock control and resource management within the department, working alongside senior physiologists to ensure efficient use of consumables and engagement with suppliers.
You will actively contribute to departmental meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and service development, demonstrating a proactive approach to enhancing clinical standards, efficiency, and patient experience.
You will support and guide junior staff, exercising initiative and clinical judgement while recognising when escalation to senior colleagues is required.
You will maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical records and contribute to data collection and reporting processes to support audit, research, and service evaluation.
The role requires a collaborative and flexible approach, working closely with colleagues across the multidisciplinary team, recognising the wider objectives of the Cardiac Department and the organisation as a whole, and contributing positively to a supportive team environment.
Educational and Supervisory
The post-holder will actively engage in the Band 6 staff development programme, demonstrating a commitment to continuous professional growth and the development of advanced clinical and leadership skills.
You will provide specialist technical and clinical advice to colleagues, junior staff, and students, promoting best practice while recognising the boundaries of your role and appropriately escalating complex issues when required.
You will take an active role in supervising and mentoring junior physiologists, including PTP and STP trainees, fostering a supportive learning environment and promoting high standards of clinical practice, professional behaviour, and accountability.
The role includes contributing to education and training across the Trust, supporting the development of medical students, PTP and STP trainees, and other healthcare professionals, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, structured learning experiences.
You will maintain your own professional competence by keeping up to date with current national guidelines, emerging technologies, and best practice within cardiac physiology. This includes attending relevant courses, conferences, and study days to support ongoing continuous professional development (CPD).
You will ensure all mandatory training requirements are maintained in line with Trust policy and regulatory standards.
The post-holder will actively participate in annual appraisal and personal development planning processes, demonstrating a proactive approach to achieving professional goals and enhancing clinical expertise.
You will be expected to maintain relevant clinical accreditation and will be supported to work towards additional accreditation where appropriate. This includes progressing towards STP equivalence and maintaining active membership with recognised professional bodies.
You will be encouraged to contribute to the advancement of the profession through the development of case studies, audit work, and clinical abstracts, with opportunities to present findings at conferences and submit work for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
