We currently have a vacancy for an experienced, registered nurse, to become part of the team within Oncology Outpatients & Chemotherapy Day Case Unit, within the Clinical Sciences, Cancer and Diagnostics Division at Derriford Hospital. Flexible shift patterns are worked.
Applicants should have worked for at least two years as a Band 5 nurse, ideally with some Oncology experience. Venepuncture & cannulation skills are an advantage. Within the unit, the nurse will co-ordinate outpatient clinics, administer Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies (SACT), and provide support to patients & relatives/carers on a day to day basis.
An induction period for new staff is provided; training & ongoing study days/sessions will be available.

Clinical
Providing and delivering a high standard of nursing care by initiating and co-coordinating the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation of individual patients needs based on the ward philosophy. This includes all aspects of care from admission to the planning & organisation of discharge arrangements with voluntary & statutory agencies to ensure continuity of care from the hospital to the community or continuing care setting.
Reporting and documenting all relevant nursing/patient needs, communicating changes with other health care professionals in the multi-disciplinary team with ongoing responsibility for patient care, both verbally & in writing, as they occur.
Providing and delivering health information, education & promotion within the clinical area and advise patient, family, and others in a manner which maintains an individuals privacy & dignity.
Engage & interact with carers/family encouraging them to be actively involved in patients care, planning as outlined in the ward philosophy.
Supports patients, their families & carers during the delivery of bad news, caring for the terminally ill and in the event of death.
Demonstrating and undertaking evidence-based practice playing an active part in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient centred care, e.g. mouth care, skin care, post radiotherapy, chemotherapy & transplantation.
Supervising, assessing, mentoring and supporting junior Registered Nurses and Health Care Professionals including bank and agency staff in the clinical setting.
Increasing the level of knowledge and skills within the Ward/Directorate through sharing best practice and supporting others to develop their professional abilities.
Implementing and sharing good infection control practice. Ensure adequate precautions taken to minimise the risk of cross infection in relation to the safe disposal of bodily fluids (including blood).
