The Role

You will be part of a small admin team who covers all secretarial and admin duties for a very busy Ophthalmology department.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

This is a full time post 37 hours per week working shift pattern has not yet been confirmed.

This post will be based within the Royal Hospital for Children.

Key Responsibilities

We are seeking an organised and motivational Support Secretary to join out administrative team supporting the Ophthalmology department at RHC. This role provides vital secretarial and administrative support to the clinical team, ensuring high quality, patient centred care is delivered efficiently.

The successful candidate will manage a varied workload including handling telephone enquiries, processing clinical correspondence, audio typing, maintaining patient records, supporting the Medical Secretary with waiting list enquiries and providing cover where required. You should be able to work independently and will be expected to demonstrate initiative, discretion and excellent communication skills.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • HNC/SVQIII in Secretarial Studies/Business Administration or equivalent experience
  • Proficient in use of software systems including Microsoft Office Packages
  • Advanced keyboard skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Good organisational and communication skills
  • Good verbal and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work under pressure in the face of competing demands

    From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
