The role of a Ward Sister/Charge Nurse is the senior clinical nurse responsible for the leadership, coordination, and delivery of patient care on the T and O Hip fracture ward. They must ensure patients (often elderly with complex needs) receive safe, high-quality, and timely orthopaedic care from admission through recovery and discharge. The individual must work well as part of a leadership team as well as being able to make individualised decisions.
Ensure high standards of patient care are delivered consistently
Act as a role model for professional nursing practice
Oversee care plans, patient assessments, and safety practices
Handle complex or deteriorating patients when needed
Ensure compliance with infection control, safeguarding, and clinical guidelines
Lead and supervise nurses, healthcare assistants, and support staff
Allocate daily workloads and manage staffing levels (rota planning)Provide mentorship, training, and appraisals for staff
Support staff wellbeing, performance, and professional development
Manage conflicts or performance issues within the team
Lead on clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives
Monitor incidents, complaints, and risks (e.g. Datix reporting)Implement changes to improve patient safety and outcomes
Ensure compliance with CQC standards and NHS policies
Act as a key link between:
- Doctors and multidisciplinary teams
- Patients and families
- Hospital management
Participate in ward rounds and case discussions
Deal with patient/family concerns or complaints
