Secure English Language Test (SELT)
A Secure English Language Test (SELT) is an English proficiency exam approved by the UK Home Office for use in visa and settlement applications. Unlike general English qualifications, SELTs are taken at approved test centres, results are verified directly with the Home Office, and certificates cannot be forged or reused fraudulently — hence "secure."

What Is a SELT?
English language tests have long been required for UK visa applicants, but fraud was historically common — certificates were forged, results were shared, or tests were taken by proxies. The Home Office introduced the SELT framework to create a closed, verifiable system:
- Tests are taken at approved test centres registered with the Home Office
- Results are transmitted directly to UKVI by the test provider — applicants cannot present a paper certificate that can be altered
- Each test is linked to a unique applicant identity, verified via biometrics at the test centre
- Test providers must meet UK government security standards and undergo regular audits
This is why you cannot use a general IELTS or TOEFL result for UK visa purposes — you must specifically take the UKVI-approved version of those tests.
Which Visa Routes Require a SELT?
A SELT is required for:
- Skilled Worker Visa — at CEFR B1 level in reading, writing, speaking, and listening
- Health and Care Worker Visa — same B1 requirement
- Student Visa — at the level required by the institution (typically B2)
- Family visas (spouse/partner) — CEFR A1 at entry, A2 at FLR stage
- Indefinite Leave to Remain — B1 level (unless exempt)
- British citizenship — B1 level English, plus the Life in the UK test
Note: The Graduate Route Visa does not require a separate SELT — the English evidence from your degree is used instead.
Approved SELT Providers
The Home Office maintains an approved list of SELT providers. As of 2024–25, these include:
| Provider | Test Name | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS (IDP & British Council) | IELTS for UKVI | Most widely available globally |
| LanguageCert | LanguageCert International ESOL SELT | Online and in-centre options |
| Pearson | PTE Academic UKVI | Computer-based, widely available |
| Trinity College London | Integrated Skills in English (ISE) / GESE | Oral-only option for some routes |
| PSI Services | Skills for English | Available at UK test centres |
Always verify the current approved list on GOV.UK before booking — providers can be suspended or added. Only tests booked and taken through the UKVI-approved channel count; the standard academic versions of these exams do not satisfy the SELT requirement.
CEFR Levels Required
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the scale used to assess English proficiency:
| CEFR Level | Descriptor | Required For |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Basic user | Family visa (entry) |
| A2 | Elementary | Family visa (FLR) |
| B1 | Intermediate | Skilled Worker visa, ILR, citizenship |
| B2 | Upper-intermediate | Most Student visa courses |
| C1 | Advanced | Some academic and professional routes |
For most sponsored workers on the Skilled Worker route, B1 in all four skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) is the requirement — both for the initial visa and for subsequent ILR and citizenship applications.
What the Test Covers
All SELT tests assess the four core skills:
- Listening — understanding spoken English in workplace and everyday contexts
- Reading — comprehending written texts
- Writing — producing written responses
- Speaking — oral communication (face-to-face or recorded, depending on provider)
Some routes (such as family visas at A1/A2 level) only require speaking and listening components. The specific components required depend on the visa route — check the Home Office guidance for your route before booking.
Who Is Exempt?
You do not need to take a SELT if you:
- Are a national of a majority English-speaking country — including: Australia, Belize, Canada, the Falkland Islands, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, St Helena, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the USA
- Hold a degree taught in English — from a UK institution or from an overseas institution, provided the degree is at the required level and the language of instruction was English (verified via Ecctis/UK ENIC)
- Have previously met the English requirement — for ILR applications, if you demonstrated B1 English for your Skilled Worker visa, you normally do not need to re-sit a test
Your sponsor or a regulated immigration adviser can confirm which exemption applies to your situation.
How Long Is a SELT Certificate Valid?
SELT certificates for visa purposes are generally valid for two years from the date of the test. This means you should take the test no more than two years before your visa application is submitted.
An exception applies to ILR and citizenship applications: if you already used a SELT for a previous successful visa application, you do not need to re-sit it — the previous evidence is accepted even if the certificate has expired.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take IELTS and use it for a UK visa?
Only the IELTS for UKVI version counts. The standard IELTS Academic or General Training test does not satisfy the SELT requirement, even at the same band score.
What happens if I fail the SELT?
There is no limit on resits — you can retake the test as many times as you need. Each attempt requires a new booking and fee. Many providers offer preparation materials and practice tests.
Do I need a SELT if I have a UK degree?
Not for most routes. If you studied at a UK university on a Student visa or as a domestic student, your degree taught in English typically satisfies the English language requirement. You will need to provide evidence (transcript or Ecctis confirmation if the degree is from overseas).
Can my employer book the SELT for me?
No — the SELT must be booked and taken by the individual applicant, as identity is verified at the test centre via passport or biometrics. Some employers do fund the cost as part of a relocation package.
Is the online SELT option accepted?
Some providers (such as LanguageCert) offer online-proctored options. These are accepted for certain routes — check the Home Office guidance for your specific visa type to confirm whether remote testing is allowed.
