Job description

The post holder will provide specialist technical advice, investigate complex AI and automation issues, contribute to the Trust AI and automation roadmap, and ensure solutions are developed and operated in line with clinical safety, information governance, cyber security and Trust standards.

Provide specialist advice on AI and automation design, configuration, testing, deployment and support to digital teams and service users.

Communicate complex and multi-stranded technical information clearly to clinical, operational and non-technical colleagues.

Negotiate requirements, priorities and practical delivery options with service teams, suppliers and technical colleagues.

Develop and deliver demonstrations, guidance, training and handover materials for AI and automation solutions.

Analyse, investigate and resolve complex AI, automation, workflow, data, integration and system issues.

Assess user requirements, process variation, data quality, error conditions, model/tool limitations and operational risks.

Compare technical options and make recommendations based on safety, security, usability, maintainability, cost and benefits.

Identify and escalate risks relating to clinical safety, information governance, cyber security, bias, equality or supplier performance.

Plan and organise specialist AI and automation development activity across multiple workstreams and service areas.

Produce technical plans, estimates, test plans, implementation plans, rollback arrangements and support documentation.

Person specification

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential

• Level 6 qualification (graduate diploma or equivalent) in a relevant subject such as IT, Computer Science, Data Science, Health Informatics or equivalent experience with evidence of professional development in the specialist subject area.
• Additional specialist knowledge in AI, automation, software development, data engineering, systems integration, analytics or digital workflow gained through training, certification or equivalent experience.
• Understanding of AI and automation technologies such as RPA, workflow automation, scripting, APIs, NLP, machine learning or low-code platforms and their safe use in healthcare.

Knowledge of information governance, data protection, cyber security, clinical safety and testing principles relevant to digital systems.

Desirable

• Agile, DevOps, ITIL, software testing, cloud, data or automation certification

Experience

Essential

• Experience designing, configuring, developing, testing or supporting digital, automation, AI-enabled, data or workflow solutions.
• Experience investigating and resolving complex technical issues involving systems, data, integrations, workflows or users.
• Experience planning and delivering specialist technical work packages or projects across multiple stakeholders

Desirable

• Experience working with clinical systems, EPRs, reporting tools, integration platforms or NHS datasets
• Experience in the NHS or wider public sector.

• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across complex technical and operational issues.
• Ability to translate user needs into safe, maintainable technical solutions and documentation.
• Ability to plan, test, implement and support technical changes using structured methods.
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical colleagues.

• Skills in scripting, workflow configuration, API/integration, data analysis, reporting or automation platform development.
