SOC 2123 (78% match) is an eligible occupation, with a going rate of £58,700, and National Grid is a licensed sponsor. That is our reading of the rules. Whether they issue a Certificate of Sponsorship is still their call.

This could also be SOC 1123 (Production managers and directors in mining and energy, If the role were primarily managing energy production operations rather than engineering asset lifecycle.) or SOC 2161 (Research and development (r&d) managers, If the focus were leading R&D and innovation rather than asset lifecycle management.). We read the code off the advert, so it is our best guess, not the employer's.

Working across engineering, operations, project delivery and corporate functions, as well as with suppliers, regulators and industry partners, you'll provide technical leadership on some of National Grid's most complex assets. You'll lead a team of specialists covering areas including asset health, maintenance strategy, technical standards, asset data, obsolescence, innovation and lifecycle risk, ensuring the business has the insight and expertise needed to make informed decisions and maximise asset performance throughout its lifecycle.

What You'll Do

You'll provide lifecycle leadership for National Grid's HVDC asset portfolio, applying your technical expertise to influence decisions across asset management, operations, maintenance, investment planning and future network capability.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Developing and maintaining HVDC lifecycle strategies, technical standards, specifications, policies and engineering guidance.
  • Acting as the lifecycle owner for HVDC converter stations and associated electrical, control, protection, cable, cooling, monitoring and auxiliary systems.
  • Providing technical leadership and subject matter expertise to resolve complex asset challenges and support business decision-making.
  • Leading asset health reviews, condition assessments, risk evaluations and intervention planning activities across the HVDC portfolio.
  • Developing refurbishment, replacement and investment strategies that balance cost, risk, reliability and performance.
  • Driving the integration of new technologies, innovation opportunities and asset improvements to support long-term network performance.
  • Owning maintenance policies, inspection strategies, spares management, supplier support arrangements, warranties and obsolescence plans.
  • Influencing asset investment plans, business cases, regulatory submissions and long-term strategic planning.
  • Working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, including operational teams, project delivery organisations, suppliers, regulators and industry bodies.
  • Leading, developing and supporting a high-performing team, fostering a culture of safety, inclusion, technical excellence and continuous improvement.

About You

We're looking for an experienced engineering leader with deep technical expertise and a strong track record of managing critical infrastructure assets within a complex environment.

You'll Bring

  • Strong engineering knowledge with the ability to make robust decisions based on cost, risk and performance considerations.
  • Extensive understanding of HVDC converter stations and associated control, protection, cable, cooling, monitoring and auxiliary systems.
  • Experience developing lifecycle strategies, maintenance policies, asset management plans and long-term investment roadmaps for critical assets.
  • Knowledge of asset health assessment, technical standards, type registration, obsolescence management and lifecycle risk management processes.
  • Proven ability to apply technical judgement to solve complex asset challenges and influence business decisions.
  • Experience working across multiple stakeholders and functions, building strong relationships and providing expert advice at all levels.
  • A track record of leading professional, matrix or multidisciplinary teams and developing technical capability.
  • Strong commercial and financial awareness, including investment planning, business case development and whole-life costing.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence regulators, suppliers, delivery partners and senior leaders.
  • A leadership style aligned with National Grid's values, with a commitment to safety, inclusion, collaboration and continuous improvement.

  • This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future performance and reliability of National Grid's HVDC assets, playing a key role in delivering a secure, resilient and sustainable energy network.
